Strange question. Atheists don't believe in hell or anything else. But just as in any religion, or its flip side, there are people who like to flip flop back and forth, not able to make up their minds.

I had a student who declared she was a atheist and later had a car accident. After the accident she declared she believed in God.

I thought that was a strange way to react, but it does illustrate the behavior of humans as feeling that somehow the whole universe is about themselves.

There is no valid proof of the existence of a God, but if there were there would still be no reason to think that God would be the least bit interested in humanity. That is so egotistical to think that way.

I am also bothered by the idea of a God who would torture people for eternity. No one deserves that. Such a God would be an unjust monster and they worship that monster. It cannot have a very good effect on Christians and Muslims who believe in eternal torture. It turns them into monsters too. That is what fundamentalists are: monsters.

Well, I do not think that they believe that telling people will suddenly convert them to christianity, because if they are the kind of people who go around telling random people that, then they know from experience that it will not instantly make anyone a believer. In fact, they will know that no one likes to hear it.

They probably think something to the effect that if they warn others about the afterlife, people might think about it, look into it, and perhaps find a way to avoid hell or whatever. According to that theory, even if people don't like hearing "bad news" it will help them eventually.

Many other christians, I hear, debate if it really works as a warning, or just comes accross like a harsh scare tactic.

I am not an atheist but as a Pagan who was formally Christian:

Christians (and I don't mean all, you know the ones I talk about) do it because they were raised to believe that the way to save other souls and be good Christians is to go around and scare people with images of what could happen to them, in the Christian world view, after they die unless they convert. They aren't doing it to deliberately scare people, they do it because they honestly do think that by showing you a bit of "tough love" like imparting "the harsh truth" unto nonbelievers that they are doing their part to help save souls and be good Christians.

It's sad and irritating, but it's understandable since I've been there and know how they think.

Every religion has their own way of trying to convert people to join their religion. They will do whatever it takes. Cuz if there are no longer any new recruits, then the religion would go the way the doh-doh in a few years. On top of that, they don't just want you to believe, thats no good...you need to attent service/church otherwise they will not make any $$.

Because that is their ultimate insult. It's like how in elementary school, you thought if you called someone stupid, then you were the coolest person because you used a "bad" word and made someone cry. It's their ultimate insult, that's all.

They just don't realize that saying that to atheists (who don't believe in hell... most, I think) it has no affect. We can't go somewhere we don't believe exists.

Because that's their greatest fear, so they think it must work on us too. I *almost* feel sorry for them. If only they could live a decent life contributing practical things, like mentoring versus "witnessing". Poor things are scared of hell, "the devil", the wrath of god, and all kindsa stuff. They live in fear and what I do not get is what someone asked on here once- if jesus died for our sins, aren't we in the clear then? lol
Hope you don't get too many believers TRYING to answer your question. They always feel like they are invited... some entitlement $hit they tell them in their churches...

Christians are only telling the truth. Its harsh yeah but if you dont give your life over to Jesus Christ then its just whats going to happen. You dont know if your going to die in the next minute or in the next day. You might die right now and then you'll realize that you made the biggest mistake of your life. Its sad.

They're not a thoughtful "I disagree with you, and here's why," but rather "our merciful God is going to condemn you to suffer in hell for eternity because you do not believe the exact same way that I do."

Luckily, most use their beliefs to enhance their own lives, rather than use them as a weapon to try to condemn or control others.
