Airplanes are equipped with exits, in the event of an emergency landing. Usually, about half way back in the aircraft, they have "exit rows." These rows have removable doors. Many passengers take these seats because they offer more leg room. Flight attendants will always ask if the seated passengers are willing, and able, to assist in the event of an emergency. Children are never allowed to sit in this row.

an exit row is a row on an airplane that has doors that will open to the outside in the case of an emergency...only able bodied adults are allowed to sit there.....also they used to have more leg room...but this now is very seldom true...often on larger aircraft the doors can actually prevent you from sitting with you feet out in front of you and the seats may or may not recline(so that they cannot block the exit)...source me---worked for a major airline for 31years

It's the row or rows of seats next to one or more doors to the plane (since technical the entrance is also considered an exit). Children or people physically unable to operate the door release can't sit in an exit row according to FAA regulations.

That's the row where the emergency exit is. If you sit there, you get extra leg room, but you have to be the one to open the emergency door in an emergency. I've sat there many a time.

The exit row is the seats nearest an emergency exit in a plane.
If you can get a seat here, you'll get extra legroom. Airlines have realized this, and started charging more for these seats.
