My grandmother wants to put all £593,002.70 on a horse called Sailor Jack that's running at the weekend. She wants to do this because she's pretty sure that her dad was a sailor.

I've tried to convince her to give the money to the kids when she goes, but she's determined to go down to Coral tomorrow and put the bet on.

First of all, can anybody think of a way to make her see sense?

Secondly, is it legal to lock an oldie up if they're losing their marbles and whatnot?

She says she has human rights and I'm not allowed to lock her up for her own protection.

Is she right?

She's not coming quietly.

Tell her to give you the money and you will do it for her then when it loses tell her what you done (before she has a heart attack at losing all that money)!!!!!!!

No, honestly, I work as a Bookies manager and if I had a penny for everytime I've heard a daft story like that then I would be a millionaire by now!!!!! YOU CANNOT BEAT THE BOOKIES!!!!!!!!!!!! trust me, I know!!!!!!

By the way,,, it's Sunday now and I can't remember that horse winning and I've been working all weekend, ,,,, so what happened,,,,,you need to let us all know before we go start raving bonkers!!!!!!!!

By the way, if the first part doesn't work, email me and you can come to my shop and I'm sure we can come to some arrangement!!!!! Only kidding,,,,good luck with whatever you do.

Tell her the horse is actually an Army nag and that betting on it would be a very bad idea.

Second, technically it's legal to lock a mentally imbalanced person, but you better have all the paperwork down right or otherwise there would be...complications.

Hope things work out well...and if the horse does come in and she does bet on it, I hope you two have a wild time at the pub. If the horse wins and you didn't bet...well, I can't help ya there. That's your problem.

Wow, that's alot of money to bet on a horse....I hope she doesn't
do this..maybe convince her to bet only a portion of the money
and talk some reason into her...but it is her money. What will
she live on if she loses the money????? Sounds like she's not
really thinkin all the clearly...think of a clever plan to reason with
her... I see where you're coming from, it's too much to risk on a horse. Then again if my grandma were still alive and had her heart set on it...I might actually want her to go for it...just not ALL of it!!! Oh and please don't lock her up, how cold! That's your
grandma and you are only thinking of the money....find another
way to salvage her life savings

It is her money, and she is an adult but this is kinda.....senile.

Don't threaten to lock her up, I'm sure she just loves that. Don't push too hard like the other guy said, it looks like your just money grubbing.

Try to explain, calmly (without the hand jestures and sighs and yelling) that she could very well loose. Why not bet a few thousand instead of everything. All the grandkids can really use that money and don't want to see her loose it all on one silly bet.

Good luck, but if she does end up betting it all, you have to come back to yahoo and let us know...please.

And also, if she does, you better get $20 bucks down with her!

HEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S SATURDAY, DID SHE WIN? ADD DETAILS IF YOU CAN, I REALLY WANT TO KNOW.

Do what my Gran used to do to my granddad - say you'll go and place the bet for her - (DO NOT PLACE THE BET) fill out a blank betting slip and take it home making sure to keep all the money safe. If the horse wins say you made a mistake on the slip and give her the money back - (in the form of a long term bond she can't cash). Or alternatively if it loses - keep it for your family when she goes!

Hey, judging from your previous questions I'm sure this isn't a serious worry.............but if it is................why not let the old bird have her flutter. You never know the sailor may come into port and the kids will have more money than sense to inherit when the time comes!
Old people have far more sense than the young, the young just don't realise yet.
You can't lock her up. That's really cruel. I know who you are and I'll call the RSPCG to report you if you do, young man!

but if she's determined !!!!

The thing is you could ask her how she would feel if it lost, but if it won she would blame you. Can't she put a fair amount on say a £1000 thats substantial; enough surely. You have to reinforce the fact of how she will feels if it loses, even the odds on fav's lose all the time.

I can't believe all you guys taking this question seriously.

Firstly where is she going to get the cash to take into Coral's tomorrow and even if she does then Coral's have a limit on how much they can accept on a bet.

Wise up you lot!!!!

Offer to place the bet for her, then flee the country. You can then have fun trying to ease your conscience on a beach somewhere with £1/2 M in your pocket.
If this works out for you and you are feeling indebted to me, I'll meet you in Bali at Christmas for drinks.
