Ours does that too. Another problem I have with it is that the burners aren't as big as they should be. The red lights don't extend out very much. Honestly, I don't care much for the flat top stoves, but I'm stuck with this one for awhile now. Lol!!!

If you use a good thick bottomed pan or pot like All-Clad you won't have that issue so much. And for gods sake as another answer mentioned if you have a cabinet over the stove take anything metal or heavy out of it. I had a glass spice jar fall out when I opened the door and it shattered the top. In looking for a replacement I found out such things are the number one reason for breakage.I found out it would be $400 plus shipping and labor to replace when the stove at the time was $500 or so. I just bought a new stove. And as far as the smaller burners with a thick pan the heat will be transferred throughout the pan and will heat more evenly.

It is called electric stoves, I hate them. They are horrible to cook with. The only thing is to turn it on too the lowest time then move it up if the temp isn't right. I'm getting a gas stove put in as soon as I can!

I've got an older one, and yes. I've learned to adjust to mine - seldom do I use it oh "high" because it gets so hot! Simmering is difficult - I usually simmer on #2! I've gotten used to it, but I'd never buy another flat top!

I have a flat top and I have never had problems. Maybe there is a malfunction with something. Ask the company you bought it from to come have a look at it, you might feel stupid but your the one who spent the money for it!

I broke mine when a baby food jar fell on it. Sears replaced it for free, even though the warrentee was up, bless their souls. So clear your upper shelves! Tupperware only!
Heat controls are fine though -- always have been.
