I have heard it said that WW4 is the current conflict. The Cold War was number 3 but after what happened in Europe in WWII nobody really had the stomach to face up to the fact that a global conflict was raging so they pretend it was something else. WW4 began its buildup in the 1980 gas crisis when Jimmy Carter stepped up the amount of American military presence in the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia and with weapons aid to Israel in response to public outcry from Americans who did not want to pay more money for gas or have OPEC control too many American interests. That buildup has continued steadily for the last 25 years, and it is specifically that presence which bin Laden objects to, and he has said he will stop fighting if America removes its military bases from Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region.
I don't know if I would say the hard line fighting in WW4 is as global as it was in the Cold War, since it is mostly taking place in the Middle East so far, but since everybody needs energy all over the world, it certainly has the potential to heat up in lots of different places over the next 50 years if it goes on that long.
Einstein was thinking about nuclear war when he said "World War 4 will be fought with sticks and stones". The strange thing is that WW3 never went nuclear, but a lot of this conflict we are in right now actually IS being fought with sticks and stones and other very primitive weapons. At least on one side of the conflict. The Palestinians are not armed with much more than that, neither are the Lebanese, North Korea (fears of failed rocket power notwithstanding) the Sudan and Nigeria, heck, even the boxcutters they used on Sept 11th are not exactly the robot army of the future envisioned in movies like the Terminator.

World War III is still not in the offing. The violence in Pakistan, Israel and Lebanon are only pocket incidents of terrorism. Russia and China are only supporting Iran but these countries will not fight with it. The United Nations is still controlling the countries as of this moment.

(some factions) Many Muslims are truly anti west and want the destruction of our way of life because they are taught early show no understanding to nonbelievers. Many Muslim nations preach hate and back it up with money. The west is still divided we must stop trying to understand its a sign of weakness to them. The sooner the better lets get this crap over with once and for all. Yes it will cost
