If you can afford it go to Ireland. The people are kind, the landscape is breathtaking and the history is alive everywhere you look. It's an English speaking country where they don't yet hate Americans. You will be treated with respect and may never want to leave.
England is also good because with one train ride you can visit Scotland or Wales and you can even bop over to France for a few hours and go home saying you have visited three countries.
There is a valley in the Alps in which you can visit Germany, Italy and Austria in one afternoon. I'll let you do the research. English is common there but so are tourists so you won't get to "feel foreign".
You have to go to Europe if you can, it will humble you.
Good luck and have fun.

I've hitchhiked all across Eastern Europe (and parts of the Russian Federation and Turkey if you don't count those as parts of Europe--sometimes half of Istanbul is considered European and the other half isn't), and I really like Romania, but I think many parts of it are too full of tourists for you to really get a good idea of the culture. I would really recommend the Republic of Bulgaria because it's not toured so much, but that may also be part of the reason you need to be careful. As I say, I've hitchhiked all over it, but I am native to the southwestern Russian Federation. Most Americans seem apprehensive about Eastern Europe and the Balkans in general, and a trip there could destroy some of the stereotypes you have of Eastern Europe. I've been through Bulgaria many times; the people there are among the poorest in Europe, maybe not the most hygenic people you'll meet, but certainly some of the nicest you'll meet anywhere. You just have to know a bit about traveling in Eastern Europe or travel in general: don't act like you're confused if you can help it...that's good advice for anywhere you go though. Be assertive, but remember that it's okay to ask for help; just use good judgement. Eastern Europe has a very unique culture, and this would be a great experience for you because even though the Republic of Bulgaria is in Europe yet, the influence of the Middle East and Asia are evident nonetheless. It's a great place! I've been to Italy, Austria, Hungary, Greece, and some of the Western European countries that attract more tourists, but I prefer the road less traveled; that's why I prefer Bulgaria!

My vote is on Paris. From Paris there are so many wonderful places you can visit in France such as Nice, South France where the beaches are, Versailles, and if you really want to goto London, you can take the Eurostar train.
Why wouldn't I goto England? Well, after being in Paris, England will look so ordinary. Paris has such wonderful architecture. The city is so beautiful. It has this European charm that London lacks. The weather in London is rainy and things are expensive. You can spend weeks in Paris and still be amazed everytime you walk down the street. I would visit Paris over and over because there is so much to see and do there.
My second pick would be Spain. If you want a relaxing vacation, you can visit Gran Canarias - Tenerife which is on the coast of Morocco. It's part of Spain and has the highest peak in all of Spain. Mt. Tiede is an absolutely wonderful hike! The air is so blue up there it's unbelieavble. Barcelona is wonderful. The Ramblas has many little things to buy. But one can also visit the Palau de Musica, Sacred Family Cathedral, Orinial Seaport, and many other places.
You could easily spend two weeks in Paris and not get bored. I was bored after 3 days in England. But it didn't help that I was in Spain, and Paris before hand. England is so boring. There is nothing really that spectacular to see there.

I would choose the following route to get some of the diversity of Europe:
Fly into Amsterdam and stay there for 2 days
then take the train into Germany down the Rhine river and stop in Heidelberg. Take one day there. Continue down the river into Switzerland and see Bern with the Bernese Mountains for 2 days. Travel from here to France (Provence) and the French Riviera (I like Nice over Cannes). Allow 3 to 4 days here. Next country should be Italy (Milan). Depending if time allows see Salzburg in Austria and fly back from Munich (Germany).

France. It's stunningly beautiful, the people are kind, the transportation system is fantastic. No matter what kind of activities you enjoy, there is no shortage of things to do. In 2 weeks you will barely scratch the surface of all France has to offer. And, if you like, you can easily make side trips into other countries; Italy, Switzerland, England, Belgium, and Germany are all within easy reach, within a day.
Wherever you decide to go, have a great time!

Where ever you go in Europe you'll experience a completely different life then here in North America. To name one country for your visit is doing injustice to other countries. Have you thought about a bus tour, a train tour, do you want to see the Scandinavian Countries, the Baltic countries, the Benelux countries, do you like alps, lakes, mountains Why not look at a bus tour covering several countries. Your search engine re: travel in Europe, tours in Europe, trains in Europe will give you a host of information.

The most romantic place I could imagine (it must be great, because all the Greek workers to Germany that I know never go anywhere else but home for vacation) is Greece. My plans for my honeymoon is Santorini, Greece. Some people who like italians go to Tuscany. Me, I like Spain(lorret de mar), France.(colmar, Cannes (expensive) or Strassburg) Athens has a great nite life.

The French Riviera. It was the most relaxing and beautiful and fun place I visited in Europe. We stayed in Nice, France. It's also just a short train ride from Monte Carlo; we went gambling there one night.
