Decomposition. People miss you. There are a lot of bills left over for your family to pay. Someone else has to fill your position at work. All that kind of stuff that actually happens...unless you're embalmed really well, or if you're retired already by the time you die.

I agree with ~Whatshername~, it depends on the atheist. Just because someone is an atheist doesn't necessarily mean they aren't religious and or spiritual. While the majority of atheists seem to believe that when they die nothing happens (they are buried or cremated, etc.), I am sure there are some that believe in heaven/hell or somewhere else. Some probably believe in reincarnation. God is simply removed from what they believe. I personally believe in the former, that when someone dies nothing happens, they are just dead forever.

Being an athiest, I've never thought about it until I was looking thru these lame questions and found urs!!!!
Now if I think about it, I believe we just 'shut down' like a computer does, our bodies get taken care of (cremated or buried), and that's it really. I don't believe in reincarnation, no one watches from above......nudda.
I try to be good person because I believe in karma (what goes arnd comes arnd), not because I'm worried about heaven or hell.
I sometimes refer to God, even though I'm not a believer.
If I was to marry a Christian or Catholic, I'd b happy to convert cos I could handle those religions. Any other religion that requires much effort is out of the question. I just can't commit to churches and praying etc. That's too much.

There is no "soul," no "afterlife," no "heaven," no "hell."
With that out of the way, you must realize that it is not so gloomy as it seems. When someone dies, whether they are buried or cremated, they return to the environment as part of the Carbon Cycle. Our deceased loved ones are in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. They nourish us just as their loved ones nourished them.

To one's body, it decomposes (or is cremated) and the raw chemicals, molecules and elements in the human body return back to nature in smaller consituent parts.
As for my conscious, who I am, it will forever be gone, except for some shallow reflections I leave in my writings and my deeds. When I die, that will be the last thought I will ever have.

When you die, you die. That is the end. That's what they believe. And what do you mean you "always knew"? Have you died before?

absolutely nothing. It's just the end. See I don't believe we have a "soul" so there is nothing to go anywhere. Just our body which rots away.
