Something from 1966???
Like a Sock Hop perhaps.
Play all songs from that era.

Well, she was born in 1966. Maybe have a 60s party?
60s style is back in style. You could do polka dots- big - and the colors that are "in" now like lime green, etc. would be great.

You could play 60s music- Beach Boys, Beatles, The Monkees, etc.

Maybe even have a trivia game and give out prizes@

It wouldn't be too hard for decorating- check your local party store.

I know your mom said don't have too much decorations but do it anyway. They always end up loving it that you spent the time and effort on her.

Use a theme that is one of your mom's hobbies or something that makes her very happy! Tropical luau themes always work. Just make sure you don't try one of those senior home themes!

Maybe like a poker bday! A lot of people love poker! Its not too much decor and also its not in the 50's or 60's!

Margaritaville sounds like a great idea! I did the same thing for my Mom's 50th and we even brought in a Mariachi band. For your mom, you could play festive mariachi music, decorate with paper lanterns, and serve tortillas and chips. I hope you have a great time with your mom!

Is she bummed about it? Because my moms 50th is coming up so we are naming it "The 20th Anniversary of *name* 30th Birthday", she says that was a good year for her. If your mom is down for a smash go all out and bring it back to her collage days with a toga party. Good Luck

On my 40th birthday, we did a murder mystery party and dressed up in character. The setting was a riverboat so we had "fake" gambling and made up our own "money". We had a roulet table and gave a prize for the most money won.

I am turning 40 in two weeks and it really depends on her interests. If she likes to cook maybe you could take her to a cooking class just the two of you.

Maybe you could get a CD by Jimmy Buffet and have it in the background. And I think I have seen candles in the shape of margeritas.

for a fortieth birthday the "over the hill" theme is a must. Any party supply store will have all you need.

just as long as you don't do over the hill, that might hurt her feelings and who wants to be reminded that they are old, lol
i think that your theme you spoke of would be really cute
