I've been doing yoga for about 2 years and now my wrists ache. It is not like the soreness that you feel when you overexert yourself. It is more of an ache. Stretching used to help a little. But now, I can't tell if the pain is in the muscles or the joint. I think that my alignment is good, and I keep my elbows turned down in downward dog. Sometimes the pain will go away as I move further into the workout.

My yoga teachers tend to focus on the hands, wrists, and the grip that we students take when entering poses like Upward Dog and Downward Dog because they warn that if we don't do so, we risk injury. If you're doing yoga with a teacher, you may want to ask for help in determining if this is the root cause of your soreness. If you've been practicing with videos for the past 2 years, it may be worth it to pay the price for 1-2 classes with an instructor or to pay for an individual practice so you can get your alignment looked at. Even though I think I'm doing a posture correctly, the teacher may still correct me or suggest a modification. Yoga Journal's Baxter Bell suggests the possible causes may also include muscle/tendon tightness and also recommends some ways for you to continue your practice while also giving yourself time to heal. I've referenced the article below. Good luck!

it could be the start of arthritis. Go see a rheumatologist, and you might consider avoiding any activities right now that cause severe flexion at the wrists.

I get bouts of arthritis when I am highly stressed, and sometimes can't handle yoga positions where I am balanced on my hands like that...

May be weak wrists. May be that you are putting too much pressure on them. Or maybe you have injured them in the past doing something. Id see a dr. about it.
