I got braces around Easter this year. In my honest opinion, spacers are worse than braces. Yes, they ache terribly.
Getting braces on is basically painless, but afterwards scarred me for life. For a week, it was terrible pain. i had cuts in my mouth as it got used ti the metal, and as my teeth started to shift, that hurt, too. However, like magic, after a week the pain disapperared and the sores calloused.
Good luck with your braces! By the way, milkshakes and pudding are good food ideas for the first week. DO NOT try bread! Again, good luck!

yes it hurts, and the pain will subside after a few days, and then you will see the dentist again to have the bands adjusted a little more and so the pain never really goes away, just gets more manageable. the teeth will feel a little lose, that is because they are moving though the bone, they will tighten up again when the dentist has them where they need to be. the main thing for you to do is keep the teeth clean, even though your mouth hurts, take the time to brush and floss, you don't want a mouth full of cavities after you have gone though the time, pain and expense of having your teeth straightened.

Pain from the spacers will go away in 1-3 days.
Slight discomfort of the teeth will begin a few hours after your braces are placed.
Discomfort of the teeth can dissipate within one day, or last up to one week.
What To Expect With Braces
The temporary soreness caused by spacers goes away in one to three days.
Ibuprofen can be taken for discomfort and warm salt water rinses will also help relieve the soreness.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
After initial placement of the braces, your lips will feel like they are sticking out.
Your lips and cheeks will have to get accustomed to your new hardware, and frequent use of your orthodontic wax on areas of irritation will help you “toughen” these tissues.
If your supply of wax runs out, call our office for more.
Wax may also be purchased at a local drug store.
Slight discomfort of the teeth will begin a few hours after your braces are placed. The discomfort mimics a pressure sensation or a dull ache. You should not feel anything sharp. The teeth may be slightly mobile, since they will already be moving into their new corrected position. Discomfort of the teeth can dissipate within one day, or last up to one week. Exactly when the discomfort subsides is impossible to predict and differs with each patient, although most report relief within 2-3 days. A soft diet may be needed during these days, such as jello, soups, soft casseroles, etc. until you feel more comfortable. Small bites and chewing on the back teeth may also help. Nonprescription pain remedies, such as Advil, Tylenol, or a generic equivalent are recommended for discomfort. If the patient can tolerate these medications, as much as two to three times the dosage can be administered to acquire more of a prescription strength. For maximum effectiveness, it may be best to take such medication before the discomfort begins.

My spacers were sore for about a day. Just be careful about the foods you eat, because they will pop out if you eat Doritos, a candy apple, etc. Getting braces isn't so bad, they take a few days to get used to and feel a little sore at first. Just take some tylenol and use some anbesol if needed. Overall, they are definitely worth it!

When you get your braces on for the first time you'll feel pressure for the first few days. After about a week or two you begin to not notice it at all.

Now would be a good time to take aspirin or advil. Yes it hurts the whole time you have them and it doesn't stop till you get them off. Unless you have a good orthodontist, but those are rare!
