THE CORRECT ANSWER
i can't believe how many stupid responses there are to this question. The most spoken (most number of speakers) language is Mandarin Chinese (user DJ is ignorant- the Communists have every student learning Mandarin) hands down. The most widely spoken (most countries and most people who speak it as a 2nd language) language though is English.

English. Second is French, the language of Diplomacy.
First of all, it's the language of the Internet and will become by far the dominate language of the future.
English is actually a fairly new language. It's an amalgamation of most European language groups and it changes very dramatically and very rapidly and it will continue to be very flexible.
You would have a hard time communicating with King Henry VIII for example and that was about 500 years ago and he spoke "English".
There is no "Chinese" language as a previous poster mentioned. There are dozens of languages in present day China under three main language groups. Not even the Communist have managed to get them all speaking the same language........but they all learn English!

Actually if we are to count per person in the world, with China being the most populated country in the world, I would say Chinese, and Arabic being the second. But actually it could be a tie between English and Spanish, then French, German and Italian, then portuguese.
On the other hand, English is the language of commerce and you can find someone who speaks English in every single country in the world.

you know, before this, i would've said English. I was wrong.
Based on what everyone else said, it must be Mandarin Chinese (we learned about China and Chinese History last year) first and English with a close second, since it's a kinda versatile language. People from foreign countries i guess would have to get the hang of the language before being able to speak it fluently.
