Well I know that America and Cannabis Sativa were as one at the beginning,in America's beginning Henry Fords first Model T body was composed of Cannabis. Without hemp America would not have a Navy, without Hemp they would have no sails, no rope and hardly a ship or boat to float. It is a historical fact that George Washington himself, grew Cannabis. He encouraged, taxpaying Citizens to grow hemp and pay their taxes with part of the hemp they had grown! History shows repeatedly that hemp was a major product in America for export and import as well.In Americas early years, Cannabis sativa was literally used in everything, an America prospered because of it's use and cultivation. The US Navy is still dependant on hemp for long lasting ship lashings and has stockpiled it for future use. There is no logical reason to illegalize pot except for one. That reason is because when Americans smoke, eat or ingest the flower buds of the plant, they become ( AFTER GRASPING REALITY) passive, gentle, and understanding of their fellow man, as well as people from all walks of life. They become more enept at understanding people of different cultures and races. It has been proven, and it is a scientific fact that cannabis sativa is a mood altering , violence inhibiting, non physical addicting , friendly herb, with thousands of uses! OK,OK,OK, If the government legalizes hemp, people will become to level headed, figure out there problems with out political infringement and presidential intervention, and wars will become obsolete! That's the honest to God truth, it's true and no one ,I mean absolutly no one can say logically or prove otherwise. The use of Government and Presidential power becomes obsolete by it's taxpaying citizens. The working man becomes too aware of the laziest , most corrupt, dregs of society and rebukes them everytime. That is why Hemp is illegal and will always be illegal as long as nations like and including America stay with their antiquated ideas of interepting reality and politicans use dirty politics against it's citizens, and citizens revolt against them. That is the only reason weed is illegal today!

Politics.

1) It began with DuPont, which was creating synthetic fibers for clothing, military parachutes, and all sorts of stuff. DuPont owns the patents for Rayon and Orlon and such. They were big lobbyists and campaign contributors. Their synthetic fibers were rivaled by only one natural fiber: hemp.

Hemp was prevalent in the U.S. during World War II, because many military things were made of its fibers. George Bush the Elder actually used parachutes that contained hemp fibers when he was young and in the war. It's true.

Since hemp was prevalent, that meant marijuana was, for all intents and purposes, legal. There were wide marijuana fields all throughout the Midwest, growing "pot" in order to harvest hemp.

DuPont wanted this to end, and they had enough political clout to "buy off" some key politicians, who signed legislation to criminalize marijuana.

2) It is hard as hell to regulate. Alcohol is easier to regulate, because it is processed and whatnot--and because it comes from fruit, grains, and other such stuff. Marijuana, on the other hand, grows in all sorts of strains, strengths, and hybrids. Creating the infrastructure for a regulatory process for marijuana would be extremely expensive.

Moreover, the U.S. would be importing marijuana from countries where there is a lot of violence over marijuana--like Mexico, Chile, and Venezuela, and some other Central and South American countries. Alcohol doesn't have to be imported--since it is "manufactured" using a process of fermentation, distillation, and the like. All we need are the fruits, berries, vegetables, and whatever else booze can be made out of. People aren't slaying each other in Mexico over turf wars regarding the growing and distribution of, say, grapes and peaches. But marijuana is a whole other ball of wax--so getting into the arena legally means all sorts of difficult implications regarding interactions with certain less stable governments.

P.S.--I'm just explaining, not advocating. I don't use alcohol or marijuana, but I am familiar with the political reasons for alcohol being legal and marijuana being illegal.

P.P.S.--I came back and read a new entry, two down from mine, and feel compelled to dispute it: I know plenty--and I mean PLENTY--of violent, racist, intolerant marijuana smokers. It is in no way a proven fact that marijuana makes people passive, happy, and willing to live in harmony. This is a ridiculous proposition, and there is no research to back it up. The person who said it below probably has some good intentions, and that may be his limited experience with the drug and its users, but he's just not telling the truth about research proving these things.

There are many reasons, but none of them are good.

Check out the movie "Grass". It sheds a lot of light on the reasons for marijuana prohibition.

Those that contend the long-term effects of marijuana use are more serious than those of alcohol haven't done their homework.

Marijuana isn't good for you, but it's almost benign when compared to alcohol. It's well established that either is safe when used in moderation, but when abused, alcohol will kill you. Alcohol abuse will not only destroy the mind faster than marijuana abuse, but the body as well. Alcohol is a poison. It wreaks havoc on the liver, kidneys, gall bladder, heart, pancreas, and spleen.

Marijuana, when abused, is hard on the lungs, may lower your sex drive and ability to procreate, and will definitely dull your intellect. However, it won't kill you and you'll never have chemical withdrawals from not smoking pot (unlike alcohol withdrawals which can also lead to death).

As for marijuana being considered a "gateway drug", it's utterly preposterous. The myth came about because of surveys done on US heroin and cocaine addicts, many of which admitted to using marijuana prior to using harder drugs. The problem is, the logic chain was never completed. They didn't ask these same people if they also drank beer, smoked cigarettes, drank Coca-cola, or ate McDonalds. Had they completed the survey, they would have deduced that coffee is more of a gateway drug than marijuana. The surveys also neglected to mention that the vast majority of marijuana users never turn to hard drugs.

Honestly, anyone who still believes marijuana is more dangerous than alcohol is either developmentally disabled or drunk.

There is no good reason for it. The only thing I can think of is maybe Pot isn't addictive like alcohol and tobacco, and the gov't needs to keep us on addictive substances to maintain their budgets. They like alcohol and tobacco, because it kills over a long period of time, allowing them to extract the maximum amount of money from the victims. Otherwise, they'd just go straight to crack or Meth or E. Government is inherently evil, and politicians are spiritually corrupt hypocritical parasites who deserve what ever ill comes to them.

The state need allot of money to finance Gulf War, so incomes from alcohol are welcomed, but because of long terms effects of weed and other drugs it don't need junkie citizens (they are not good to work and produce money for the economy). And behalf of that, the state have church and society too... and parents don't want weed for their children's and no politician want protests from population of the country.

Alcohol is more ingrained into the traditions and customs of our society. This also means that there have been established companies that produce alcohol and are willing to lobby aganst things like Prohibition.

Because alcohol is man-made? Profits from alcohol is sky high, and if weed is legalised then that makes a pathway for harder drugs to be legalised...
