I looked up the word 'cursing' and you know, synonyms that came up were...................
disrespectful, impious, GODLESS, and ...... UNGODLY!!
So, to answer your question correctly, I have to say people cuss as much as they do because they have not yet, established a relationship with God. The bible says at 1 John 4:8:
"He that does not love has not come to know God, because God is love."
Therefore, those that are cussing the way they do, are not truly loving people. Cussing is NOT "LOVE." Don't you agree??

They cuss because they are intellectually lazy. It takes a certain degree of mental activity to find the right word and to say exactly what you mean. Cussing is all about emotion.
I cuss. Not much, but sometimes it seems to fit what I'm feeling or trying to express. But, I am aware of what I am doing. Generally, my language choices are very deliberate, which makes me appear to have a certain intellectual sophistication, like 'no, I'm not the doctor, but I did choose not to cuss in that sentence." I know that if I want to communicate with the highest effectiveness I need to choose the right words. Choosing swear words is like sitting at a traffic light revving your engine. It may sound like you're going somewhere, but you're mainly just wasting energy.

I know lots of people who cuss so much that they don't even realize when they're doing it.
I think more and more people don't realize how ignorant it makes them look.
Have I cussed? Sure. Do I try not to? Of course.
And although, yes, we are entitled to free speech (whenever it is negative), and many people claim it, even when it offends others (again, a constitutional right), why is it that positive speech referring to Christ, God, or any Christian reference all of a sudden is censored?
Ask most of the folks who claim to "back" free speech, and they are usually the ones have a fit when I want to speak freely about God.

Dear Summerlin,
It is interesting that you asked this question in the Religion/Spirituality room! One would expect people here to be concerned about right living (with the exception of atheists, and evolutionists). I believe those who curse and disrespect God's name are in rebellion to God. They not only do not want to obey the Lord but actually hate the fact that they are going to stand before Him on Judgement Day (end of the world). The Bible tells us that those who are not saved actually take pleasure in anything contrary to God and His word (Romans 1). Tere is always the possibility that these may come to know Jesus Christ as Savior. For more info see www.familyradio.com.

I only cuss around my friends, and when I get really, really mad, but I don't do it around my superiors, elders, or people I don't know that well.
I don't see what the bible has to do with cussing. Words like f*ck weren't even spoken when the bible was written, so, actually it is just a word.

You are right.. swearing lets off steam. See, if you bottle up that steam your blood pressure will go up and that is not healthy so if like myself you are prone to high blood pressure it does do something for you. Swearing at times is the fastest outlet for letting off steam.

Cursing is ancient....it was associated with hexes and putting black magic spells on your enemies. the worse curses originated in celtic ireland and anglo saxon england.,and oddly enough, and very anti women....curses associated with female anatomy and sexuality were considered the worst, especially by the puritan s and protestants and catholics. today I believe that the rappers, and heavy metal gourps proliferate cursing....as the music industry and hollywood have challenged censorship of the written, verbal, and screen produced launguage....WHY? i guess it was thought that america stands for FREEDOM of speech....and now we are reaping what we have sowed...freedom does not come without a price...freedom does not come without discipline,. My advice is have a standard and stick by it...do not allow cursing in your sound presence....and have a good chat with your kids about territory and boundaries for that....we have to be vigilant, and make choices....that is our life today....peace, mld
