Yes, watch the "king" in a pride of lions. Maybe that's where it comes from.

My cats like to watch Broadway musicals. When they turned 18 years old and of legal age, they threatened to go to court and be emancipated from me if I didn't obey their every wish. I had to sell my house and car and some body parts to get enough money to send them to tap dancing school. It's hard to type this reply because I had to sell my kidneys, liver, and lungs to get the tuition money and I'm in great physical pain. But the cats are doing fine. They are in the musical "CATS" so I guess it was worth it.

I think all pets should be spoiled. I'll give you an example of how spoiled my cat Linus is (Linus is an inside/outside cat).

I was out on the porch having a smoke after I got off work. It was raining really bad. As I was finishing my smoke, I heard a yowling that sounded like Linus. When I looked in the general direction of the yowl, I saw Linus hunkered down under one of our minivans. He was upset because he wanted to get back to the house but didn't want to walk in the rain. He yowled until I went and picked him up. I got an umbrella so he wouldn't get wet, and I carried him from the van to the house.

How's that for spoiled?

Of course, but they can still be trained to be "unspoiled" on certain things. I let my cat do things that weren't acceptable once I got a roommate. The cat eventually learned that it could no longer do those things. I now spoil him in other ways. I love my kitty!

Think of it this way. If you were being fed, housed and coddled. If every preference you had was granted, and if you were entertained and petted just for sitting there being you, wouldn't YOU think you were royalty?

I would hope so...all animals no matter what kind or where they live deserve respect.
