I drink nothing but diet soda but eat a lot of food that is bad for me. My reasoning is that if I dont mind the taste of a diet drink, why add the 200 or so calories.

Well, you're right that you have to consider everything that goes in, not just the soda.
But consider how much refined sugar is actually present in soft drinks, and therefore how much you're cutting out by going diet.
Every bit helps, and certainly if you can start with moderation of the quantity of the junk food (1 hotdog rather than 2, popcorn without the "butter" grease sauce), it's a way to start.
And cutting out all the sugar from the soda is good, whether you eat tofu and salad or not.

NOt everyone drinks diet soda for the "weightloss" benefits. I for one hate the taste of Coke, but love the taste of Diet Coke, so I drink that. Not once has it come into my mind that one is better for you than the other. Don't judge people drinking something that you consider they shouldn't. Who cares if a big man is drinking diet soda, let him be.

yeah, i worked at a fast food place for my first job and people would order a #1, #2 etc... go large.... extra meat paddy, extra box of chicken strips, double cheese, etra large fry and then be like do you have light ranch dressing for my chicken strips... oh and I'd like a diet coke.
It used to repulse me! The only thing i could figure, is that they had to start somewhere, or that maybe they couldn't handle the sugar of reg. soda?

They think it will save them SOME calories. It's weird but, I know some people who actually prefer the taste of diet soda (can you believe that) Go figure?

I totally agree. However, I am always on a constant diet, keeping fat & sugar consuption to a minimum, but sometimes I treat myself to a snack if I go the movies. I don't want to totally gorge, so I still get my diet coke.

Some people actually like the taste of the artificial sweetener better than regular sugar. Not me though.

Diet soda tastes better.
But anyway, diet drinks aren't actually good for you. Artificial sweeteners are awful, saccharin causes stomach cancer, and I've heard they cause your cells to retain fat.
