It isn't as authentic as Alberto's, but Tio Leo's is a fantastic choice for a sit down Mexican restaurant. The food is flavorful & comes in large portions, the prices are good, and I've always had excellent service at the Del Mar location.
Tio Leo's Chicken Tortilla Soup, Eggplant Rice Bowl & Chili Rellenos are delicious. My husband likes their Steak Ranchero and Carne Asada.
You can print up dinner coupons from their website... $8.99 dinner combo or FREE Flan or Bunuelo. (The Flan is SO yummy!)
They use to have "Swing Night" which was fun. I don't think they do that anymore, but they do have Tango, Jazz, Blues, etc... Their is an entertainment schedule on Tio Leo's website also.

Here are some better places:
JV's Taco Shop- right around the corner off Morena
Old Town Mex- Old Town
Casa de Pico- Grossmont Center
Cafe Coyote- Old Town
Mario's- La Mesa
El Zarape- City Heights
Coyote Cafe(Check the name)- Carlsbad
And while not necessarily mexican, but with flavors of Mexico: Indigo Grill- Little Italy -- you ain't gonna find no chimichangas there!!

The Del Mar location is quite nice. Big portions and moderate prices. Happy hour specials, too. For the best Carne Asada burrito in San Diego, I vote for Juanita's in Encinitas, north on the 101 Hwy. Another real fine resturant is Los Olo's in Cardiff, with a great ocean view and low prices.

Their food is average. With our proximity to the border we have countless Mexican restaurants. The chain restaurants tend to serve what the tourist trade expects and finds palatable, which usually means less spice, lots of cheddar cheese (which is not a Mexican staple), and huge and usually unimaginative margaritas. For authencity, I prefer some of the small "hole in the wall" places that you will find in the homier neighborhoods. The atmosphere may be funky but the food is fantastic and better than you will get in most bigger places.

I wasnt impressed. I actually found it over priced for the taste & lack of authenticity of the food. I ate once and have not gone back since.
For most authentic mexican food, you need to go Chilango's Mexico City Grill. See website.
