When you yawn or swallow or open your mouth a certain way, the Eustachian tube opens to allow the air pressure behind the eardrum to equalize with the pressure in your current environment; THIS IS NORMAL.

However, if you feel as though there is frequently pressure behind the eardrum, and it comes back quickly even after popping the ears -- then there might be Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. This results in the annoying sense of pressure and some muffled hearing.

If it persists, it could become painful, and in time, fluid could build up behind the eardrum, which would result in greater hearing loss and could breed an infection.

So if you feel as though the popping you are experiencing is because the pressure keeps building up, consider antihistamines and/or decongestants if they are safe for you. Ideally, you should consult a physician about this problem -- preferably an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist (otolaryngologist).

If the pressure sensation is accompanied by noise in your ears (tinnitus) or spinning dizziness (vertigo), it is more serious and you really need to consult an ENT soon.

Some people hear popping or clicking sounds in their ears if they have a build-up of ear wax (cerumen), because the jaw movement changes the shape of the ear canal and displaces the wax, allowing some air to get past it. Again, seeing a Doctor is the best way to get an accurate diagnosis, because the doctor can see whether there's wax, and can also performa a tympanogram - a test that measures the eardrum's response to pressure changes.

My dad had a very similar problem and this worked for him. Go to a traditional Chinese medicine store and get some ear candles.... ask for instructions and you will need one for each ear. If you don't know of one, then most acupuncture therapist offer ear candling as a service, it is much cheaper to do it yourself though. The ear candles cost around $5 each to buy, but it can cost around $30 for a professional to do it. I use the ear candles once a month, just to clear excess wax out of my ear canal. Doing this prevents or reduces the severity of colds.

It's ear wax, get ear wax removal at the drug section of the store and get the usually blue thing (that comes with some packages) that allows you to shoot water in your ears to drain them.

I had a "Eustachian Tube Dilation," and it worked, but only for a short time. Ask the doctor who responded above...
