I just observed a scandalous scene inside a government public facility where a lady just stormed in & started yelling "who owns a Jack Russell terrier inside a car outside?!!!" it was 110 degrees that day but with windows rolled down & I later found out the dog has a bowl of water in it & the people who owns it were just doing a quick chore in that govt facility, b4 going to the beach. The lady added hysterically & shouted: "did u know that w/in (?) mins they can die? Dog killer! (or murderer!) I will take your dog if ur not going to leave now & take her home! I will call Humane Society!" She kept going on & on until 1 of the owner said: "Mind your own business or I will sue you for libel & slander. We just arrived and my wife will go back to the car after she helps me with (whatever they were doing there, i did not hear)". When I left the place, she was still going on & the man's # was called and he was just quiet while the wife went to the car/dog. What is ur opinion on this?

Um, where did the police come in and at what point? I think the woman who was yelling must have been a dog owner herself. It is true that even 10 or 20 minutes in a hot car can lead to heat exhaustion and death for very small dogs, and I've never seen an errand in a government facility take less than 10 minutes. If I had been the complaining woman, however, instead of making a scene with accusations, I would have stood by the vehicle containing the dog to check on its condition (if I was prepared to stand in the heat), then timed how long the owners were away, so as to have verifiable proof if the owners were or were not liable for cruelty to animals. My guess is if the owners had really returned in less than 10 mins, there would probably have been no case. It sounds like the owners were aware of their dog's needs and were extremely optimistic they could leave the building in a short period of time. I would have given the benefit of the doubt to them in this case, but I understand where the irate woman's anger was coming from as well.

I know you mentioned that the windows were rolled down and had water but just to show the gravity of the situating in my state you are allowed to break out windows in a car if there is a dog inside. If you think about it, would you leave a child in that same car? You would go to prison and a dog has the same body make up as a human in that they can overheat and have all the same health risks as we can. I would have acted in much the same manner although with a bit more tact. I don't know how your other question about the police calling is related but if they do this it has a technical name to it like intimidation with intent or something like that. It's illegal as far as I know so if you are having a problem with it then you should let the court know about it.

I think that woman should not have reacted so irrationally. But also, those people should not have left the dog in the car when it was that hot outside. It's true that a dog can die within minutes of being locked in a car in that kind of heat. They should have left the dog at home while they did their errand and then went back home to pick up the dog to go to the beach. Or leave the A/C on for the poor thing.

bascially you have nothint to do in this situation besides you were a by-stander, so you can't really have any part in it unless a cop or someone wanted to question you. It is not against the law to leave a dog inside a car, although it is very inhumane. unfortunately all the person who was yelling "dog murderer etc." could have done was call the humane society and/or the ASPCA and report abuse and give the car liscence number. but again, unfortunetly, no action will probably be taken......

I have to say that I agree with the lady that was angry. I think that maybe she should have handled it differently, but she was right. I have been a Vet Tech for some time now and I see alot of animals die from heat stroke. It doesn't take long for a dog to over heat. If there were two people, maybe one should have stayed in the car with the dog. That is just my opinion!

i think people are quick to judge. the lady obviously had no idea what the hell was going on and she should have found out first, before jumping to any conclusions. I'm an advocate for people not leaving their dogs in cars when it's hot outside, but at least i will watch the car for a while to make sure.

OMG can't believe someone would leave there dog in the car with all the windows up and get mad because someone else worries more about the dog than them being the owner. I just think your pet is part of your family treat them with respect because one day they could end up saving your life.

you didnt say that it directly involved you but infact you were an observer. I dont think that the cops can tell you not to it is the lawyer that can advise you not to and it is the judge that makes the ultimate decision, If you find that a cop has misused his or her shield and is trying to intimidate someone then go above their head to the detective on shift at the police station. the cop really hates it but their superiors will take action.
