I'll share with you some industry secret.
Big software houses buys from students their project and improve on them. They engage beta testers from in-house engineers to end-user groups and individuals. After several rounds of testing and bug fixing, they roll up the 'perfect long-awaited software', only very soon it had to be patch by program fixes due to buggy codes and incomplete testing.
Some companies setup R&D and invest capital on schools. Thereafter, the students project will be their development kit.

They think up of software that someone will need. They have a brainstorm of all the features needed. They program the software and make an alpha and beta form so people can test it out so they can fix bugs and get feedback. They finally finish off the software and ship it.
