"The original and only sensible version of this saying is “You can’t eat your cake and have it too,” meaning that if you eat your cake you won’t have it any more. People get confused because we use the expression “have some cake” to mean ”eat some cake,” and they therefore misunderstand what “have” means in this expression."

The quotation got mixed up over time. What it means is you can't eat your cake and have it too. In other words, you can't use up something, but still expect to have it.

You can eat it just as long as it's your cake, and you don't have some cake at home you are planning on "eating" later.

hmmm....well, just think about it this way....if you've eaten your cake, then you literally don't have it anymore, right?....so you're supposed to approach things with the mindset of "Do I want this for the momentary fulfillment of eating it or will I keep it and enjoy it for what it means to me and may potentially be/represent?"...the 'cake' or any other subject that is figuratively referred to in this quote should simply be weighed in importance and savored for its long term enjoyment, not short term...

Whatever you want, 1) have it or 2) eat it. You can pick either option, but you must realise that having done so, whichever option you pick necessarily virtually destroys the other option.
