From the Center for Disease Control:
"For many years scientists theorized as to the origins of HIV and how it appeared in the human population, most believing that HIV originated in other primates. Then in 1999, an international team of researchers reported that they had discovered the origins of HIV-1, the predominant strain of HIV in the developed world. A subspecies of chimpanzees native to west equatorial Africa had been identified as the original source of the virus. The researchers believe that HIV-1 was introduced into the human population when hunters became exposed to infected blood."

They postulize that an ape bit a human. However there are other hypotheses out there that suggest it is a mutation of the virus, as apes do not have symptoms.

The virus mutated. People in the area where the apes were infected ate sick apes, not knowing they were sick, or not caring. From there, its history. (Just a story I heard, really don't know the truth)

it is believed that by eating the apes that carried the disease it was transferred to humans and thus creating the havoc we have today. i personally go with the theory that HIV was created in a lab and accidentally set lose (well maybe not accidentally)

all the answers so far are so far off the mark. it shows just how much ignorance there is amongst the general public. the truth is viruses mutate and its not only HIV. disease that it has happened with. As i tell you this the WHO is worried sick about the bird flu mutating over to attack humans. damn these ignorant answers.

Perhaps when hunters cleaned the monkeys to eat and cut themselves, or from bites (much like they worry about bird flu crossing over to humans).
