Yes listening to music is a great idea. The biggest hurdle is being able to admit that you are nervous. Some of my best patients are ones that have been/are nervous. The people that don't admit that they are nervous are the ones that have the most trouble. The nervousness comes out in other ways, such as meanness, jumping around, complaining etc. When I have patients tell me that they are nervous, then I do a lot more to make them feel more comfortable, and less nervous. You will be fine, the worst part is the noise, which many people find so unpleasant that they think that it is pain, when it is not. Not all people are this way, but a great many. But once they turn on the music and the noise is muted, they seem to do better. You can even bring earplugs, the sound won't be as bad, but you will still be able to hear any instructions that the dentist/assistant has for you. Don't worry about it, there are much worse things in life then having a tooth filled. Try to relax and realize it could be much worse. Good luck.

First, ask if they have Nitrous Oxide ( laughing gas). Call ahead and ask now. Tell them you are really scared, so they can plan ahead to have pain killers ready.
If it is a deep cavity, they can use other local anesthetics.
Most cavities don't hurt to ( forgive me) drill or fill. But the sound of the drill really freaks me out. i know that some friends use earphones.
sometimes, a Dentist will prescribe 1 Valium for the night before, and 1 Valium for an hour or 2 before the appt.

First ask your dentist if he can use nitrous oxide to help you calm down. (it is a gas, but doesn't put you to sleep at all, just relaxes you) or ask if he can prescribe a Valium (or something like it), AND what ever you do, take a personal CD player, and your favorite music, and TURN IT UP when you don't have to talk to the dentist. I do ALL of that and it really works.
Good Luck

Do what I did. Find a doctor that does sedative dentistry. My doctor will put you out or just give you laughing gas, and then they also have a headset for me to listen to when he is drilling away.

Visualization. Visualize yourself in a different place, your favorite place, and take slow deep breaths while in the chair To help assist you, you could ask your dentist for a mild sedative, or muscle relaxor and have someone else drive you.

If your dentist didn't do anything to numb your mouth, and there are no medical reasons for this, I would get a different dentist! What a mean dentist. What is his problem?

Don't think about it at all, or close Ur eyes and just tell them to turn on the TV or the radio anything that can distract you from the pain...

make sure the dentist gives you locals so you have no pain
tell him/her you are anxious
listen to music that you like - focus on nice memories and warm beaches
and truthfully it will not hurt or be as bad as you think!
