I'm 21, 5'4", 108 lbs, female, and Chinese. I don't think I've ever seen someone like me serving on a police force. I'd really like to become a police officer.. I will have two bachelors in cognitive science and in sociology in a year... I can do all the studying and learning in the world, but I keep thinking i'm fooling myself because of my physical characteristics. It really bothers me that I can't do anything about it.. I can work out and be strong, learn to use the weapons, etc.... but I know I will still be this "tiny asian girl".. and i worry it will work against me. What do you think? Am I just wasting my time, should I settle for a different career?

Your size doesn't matter. What matters is your attitude and how you treat others. I use to be a police officer and thinking about going back into it. I know alot of women that are 5"2" and around 100 lbs. they are great officers. I am a big guy and size really doesn't matter as long as you have your heart in it. What you set yourself to believe is what you will accomplish. Please email me I would like to talk to you and help you out. My email is emt_lvn@yahoo.com. see you later.

I am an average size man applying for a police officer and I still worry I am not big enough. I asked our police chief about his opinion. His response- The people that are all huge and buff usually get in more confrontations because they rely on their size or strength which can be intimidating and they don't use their head and don't talk it through. If you are worried there is always the call you can make for a second unit if you think you are overmatched. Go for it!

Are you serious ? Just think for a moment of all the struggles your ancestors went through just for you to be where you are today. Hell, look at what women had to go through just to be accepted in this society and you know what, we are still fighting. So do I believe you can do it, YES you can. Never mind about the stereotypes or your physical characteristics. Every race has someone to represent their community. Someone they could look up to for wisdom and encouragement. What leaders do we have for our generation? You would be face for every little Asian girl that dares to dream. If this is what you really want go for it and don't let anyone stop you !

Good luck !!!!!!

asian girl, of course you can! they need all kinds of women on the force, and as a detective you could be undercover and not have to be on the street as a beat cop....you must look into the police academies, and if they donot want you because of height restrictions, etc. then approach it in other ways, ie, security, elite bodyguard, the whitehouse security, etc. there are more than a few ways to skin a deer....you must go for your dream... if you want to protect and serve then do not give up!!!!!good luck, mld
