As in music, everyone's taste in art varies. I like a lot of artists, but one that comes to mind is EL GRECO, whose name was something like Domenicus Theodeocopulus, or something like that. Originally Greek (which is what El Greco means), he painted in Spain for the king. He painted in various different forms, and there are only theories why he changed his style. Some say he went crazy, some say he was being creative. Believe what you will, I believe he was very, very advanced for his era. The paintings I enjoy of his the MOST (I like all of them) are the ones where he painted everyone in an elongated style. And if you look at the hands in his paintings, someone always had their hands like in a "V" formation (but with two fingers for each part of the "V") -- well, that was his signature!

Definitely my favorite painter is El Greco.

I love Van Gogh's Starry Night. It is both beautiful and mysterious at the same time. But, I'm the same way as you. If you put me in an art museum, I would never be able to pick a favorite.
