My other half has Dreads and I am the one that looks after them for him! Your hair is long enough to start off your Dreads.
Here's what I know
Dreadlocks are much more than just a hairstyle. They are a way of life.
Dreadlocks are different for everyone. They can be spiritual and religious, they can be a statement, and they can be fashionable and fun. Dreadlocks are what you want them to be and never let anyone tell you that you can't have them for this reason or that reason.
"One of the hardest parts of having dreadlocks is dealing with the misconceptions of those in society who don't understand them."
Are you ready for dreadlocks?
5 things to think about before you make the decision.
1. Find out if the lifestyle and the maintenance required for dreadlocks is right for you.
2. dreadlocks take time. They are not an instant hairstyle. The only way to instant dreadlocks is temporary dreadlocks.
3. Your Job. Does your job allow them? If you don't check first you could end up losing your job or putting a lot of time into making your dreadlocks and have to take them out.
4. Know your hair texture. This is important for choosing the right method to make your dreadlocks.
5. Proper dreadlocks maintenance. VERY IMPORTANT! The key to great dreadlocks is knowing how to take care of them.
5 dreadlocks Myths
1. dreadlocks are dirty. Only if you don't wash them. BIG MISTAKE! Clean hair dreads faster than dirty hair. People who care about having healthy dreadlocks wash them at least twice a week.
2. You can't wash dreadlocks. False. You can wash any kind of hair. dreadlocks are no exception. If someone tells you this, assume they have no idea what they are talking about.
3. Not washing and combing your hair is the best way to make dreadlocks. This is how animals and people who don't know what their doing make dreadlocks.
4. Only black people can have dreadlocks. Completely false, anyone can have can have them.
5. You have to shave your head to get rid of dreadlocks. Not True!
Have a look at some of these sites I found on google. Hope I helped. Good luck with the dreads.

yeah just start with single strand twist -- that is coiling the hair in little locks. Twist is with your fingers like your trying to screw a nut off a bolt. If you have very soft hair or silky hair, you're gonna have to use something to keep it from untwisting like gel or a hair wax. If not it will stay for a coupla days. You can use a little gel if you want and sit under a drier so it drys to reduce untwisting. Retwist (without taking them loose) often, like every other day and when u wash is put a stocking cap over it and be gentle. Keep your scalp oiled and that should keep dandruff down and breakage to a minimum. Keep you hair as dry as possible. If you want that sleek Blair Underwood look, brush it back at night and tight it up. If u going for dat Ying Yang look, just get in bed and keep twisting in the morning. It'll take some time for it to loc but eventually it will grow in the twist pattern. Good luck.

Go for it!!! If it doesn't work, it won't take long at all to grow it a couple more inches to start working on them. I'm thinking about dreadlocks myself, but my hairs soooo long/thick that it'd be impossible to dread it all up (and get it looking GOOD!) myself, so wanna find a salon to start the process off (one warning to you all though if you decide on this; make sure the hairdressers are doing it properly beforehand,ie backcombing etc;if they do dreadperms, steer well clear, they do not last and give dreadkids worldwide no end of hassle!!). Does anyone know of any salons that will do dreadlocks in England?? Typed it into search engines, but can't find anything!! :(
Good luck man!

Probably not. I don't understand why people like dreads in the first place.
