Conceptual thinking. Plan and organize a party, construction project, anytyhing with variables.
The worst part about most algebra classes is x-y+xy. Which does seem silly to most. If they put it in terms that you like or that most people like, I doubt if you would ever ask this question.
After working in a machine shop, I never asked the question you have again.

I use it every time I compute the gas mileage on my truck, buy fertilizer for the yard or paint fit the walls. Anytime you have to adjust a recipe for more or less servings, you use algebra. If you want to find out how long it will take to drive somewhere, you use algebra. If you want to customize your own car and find out if a bumper from an '89 VW Rabbit will fit a '49 F-250 truck (it will), you use algebra.

I use it when I figure my gas mileage, and so do most people. But thinking algebraicly, and communicating are two different things. What you learned in school, is a way to write it down, or type it into a computer. It's a language businesses use, and if you can't use that language, forget about promotions. But if you had asked about trig...I'd have said it's evil, arcane, and good only for the DEVIL! Ha ha....

If you learn algebra, you'll end up using it all the time in the real world for all kinds of things (construction projects, cooking, clothing design, computer work, accounting, etc. etc. etc.). If you don't learn the fundamentals of math, you're going to have a much harder time solving everyday, practical problems down the line. Math is everywhere!

I actually liked algebra. Schools teach it so that you can know it, not necessarily because you'll need it to be successful in life. I guess the mentality of some school is "the more you know, the better your chances of being successful."

You do.
It's college prep. You may need it in your course of study along the line.
Also, if you need to figure out you finances or budgeting, etc etc as an adult, it may be helpful to refer back to the mathematics you learned in high school.
