I f you want to start dreads- (I am a professional dread stylist in a very nice upscale salon and I do dread maintenance) - 1 inch is okay and doable. you can begin by keeping your hair as squeaky clean as possible- and stay away from conditioner. Refrain from brushing at all. Cleanliness is the key. Dr.Bronner makes a lovely bar soap that works quite well as a shampoo bar if for those that wish for dreads. DO NOT add any waxes- ths will attract dirt and grime and is nearly impossible to get out. that is just darn gross! you also do not need to twist or rat your hair - If you keep your hair clean- it will do it on its own. after some time- your hair locks will need to be split unless you want one great big dread...which some people do but i personally find unattractive. Just clean and leave it alone- time will take care of the rest. After a few years they will get heavy when wet- when this happens, i suggest seeing a dread specialist to wash it for you once a month ( you wash it more often regularly of course!!)- but having someone else do it feels ahhhhhhhhhh!

Yeah...I would say you can try it...make sure you tie it up at night. Be careful when you wash it....I have sisterlocks and in the beginning I had to braid the locs together and make sure you use a non detangling shampoo when I washed them.
I think I had a inch and a half when I started but a tool is used to form these locs so they may be more resilient than traditional locs. They do grow quickly though.

Let it get a little bit longer. That will be kind of hard to work with,
