How long have you been on these medications? The maximum benefit of these medications is 3 to 6 weeks. Are you also going for therapy too? Medications alone is not the answer solely. Talking to a psychologist or counselor in combination with drugs of this type is the most useful. If you are doing both already and you've taken your medicine for this long and longer, it is time to tell your psychiatrist about it. You may need your medication adjusted. Tell him or her how you are feeling and ask them what to do next.
Good luck to you and I hope you soon feel better!

Perhaps it's not the right medication for you!
Why don't you ask your p-doc to switch it to Lamictal instead of lithium and effexor??Just ask and check pls cos I did'nt like lithium either and am comfortable with Lamictal so far.
If you also have the aim to get manic while you have an aim to get deppressive, than you can switch to Seroquel AND Lamictal.Instead of effexor and lithium. If you are just feeling depressed try Lamictal alone at first. If it gives you hypomania than add Seroquel.Talk about these with your p-doc.

Because you are probably on the wrong medication. I take buspirone SR, 150 mg. and buspar (generic for Wellbutrin,) 10 miligrams, klonopin, and trazadone for sleep. I am no doctor but I bet you are on the wrong meds for yourself, go to another doctor, and see what he says or stay with the one you have and talk with him. Depression can be serious, I was never on lithium, but the other ones you mentioned never worked for me. I am bipolar. And have suffered from depression, anxiety, paranoia, mistrusting people, a lot of things and it took going to the right doctor to get straightened out. Hope you get better. Because Xanax never ever worked for me. Nor effexor, I will be praying for you to get on the right track, because I went through hell and back before I could feel better. warmest wishes to you!! If you don't get better, please consult with a psychiatrist and get one who knows what he is doing, not all doctors are the same.

If you've only been taking them for a short time, you may not feel better until about 2 weeks have passed.
Xanax is an anti-anxiolitic, which I believe means that it's a tranquilizer. In a sense tranquilizers are downers.

Really it depends on how long you have been taking them..some medicines can take weeks to work..if it has been awhile..go back to your doctor and tell him you need a med change..there will be something that works...you do have to put in some effort too..try using any coping skills you have learned to deal with the mood.

Have you been taking them long enough? It takes a few weeks to really feel the medication is helping. Talk to your doctor about different options. Good luck, and stay on your meds!

Read some of this guy's blog, starting a week or two back. It will really help! It's about what you can do, in addition to the meds.

He knows what he's talking about.
And DON'T stop taking your meds! When you feel better, then you can think about it, but not now.

You are missing something in your life that drugs cannot fill. You must find something to fill the emptiness and you will be complete. The most likely cure for you is companionship. If you are with someone you need them to step it up and fill that void for you. My wife was once depressed and I reassured her of herself everyday for a long time and eventually she needed nothing but me and my love to her. Good luck, don't give up.

This is a question for your therapist. If you're taking all those meds, & you're not also doing the talk-therapy thing, then you're not treating your illness, just the symptoms.
