my pitbull dislocated his left hind leg on saturday night. i took him to the vet on sunday. they said they will place it back in his socket today because it was too swollen when seen sunday. would you know how much that procedure would cost plus anesthesia? also most importantly, will he be alright after? i know you cant see his condition, but the vet said if his nerves are not responding, they will amputate his leg.any information will be appreciated.thanks.

If there was no damage to the nerves, the dog should be ok, but will need no roughhouse play or aggressive running, etc. for awhile. As far as the amputation goes, that seems a little drastic to me. Injury and nerve damage can take time to heal, and may never totally resolve, however I don't think amputation should be a consideration this early. I don't know your financial situation, but , If at all possible, try for a second opinion. Even a telephone conference to get another professional opinion.Good luck!!!!!!!!

I would say he will be alright, it actually happens often in certain breeds of dogs. mainly the hyper-active kind. I am not sure for the cost, but he will need some care. After you more than likely will have to help him walk by having a towel under the dog and you support most of the weight of his back. that will mean for anytime that he needs to walk, there will more than likely be a kind of cast as well to help with this. If it is amputated he will be fine, dogs recover very nicely from that, it will just take him time to get used to it.

going to the bathroom during either time would be my biggest worry. I am not sure how it is dealt with, but it has been dealt with in the past and those dogs have had full and spoiled lives.

One of my friends had a three legged dog. He lived a long happy life. So losting a limb is fine but it will take time to get used to it. I'm sorry but I don't know the cost. But that might not even happen. Don't worry it will be fine.

I don't know how much it would cost, but the vet who saw your dog could give you an estimate. Just ask him.
