Yep, you have to die in battle to go to Valhalla. Those who don't make the cut go to Hel, which is below the underworld (Niflheim) or to a variety of other places (those lost at sea, for instance, go to Aegir's hall at the bottom of the sea.

Odin sent the Valkyries to scoop up the bravest and deadest off of the battlefields and took them to the endless feasting Party with food and booze and all the good stuff like an eternal animal house in Valhalla. The reason for this was so that they would be there for the Great Battle, RAGNAROK to be fought between the Great Gods of Asgard and the Nasty Giants and other forces of Chaos, which same battle would be would be the End Of Everything. And which was all preordained and which Odin knew about in every detail because he had traded his eyes for the right to look down a deep well and see the future, including who fought who and who died, and how,and that everybody will die, but had to fight the battle anyhow, because it was pre ordained by Fate, and How is That For Dramatic Tragedy!!!

well i doubt that most warriors actually died of old age at that time, especially the 'brave' ones that went to Valhalla. but i think that so long as you were a good warrior than you went, no matter how you died

I always assumed one had to die in battle, but then I have never been to Valhalla so I can't say for sure.

I don't know Norse mythology that well, but according to Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle, Wotan's plan was to collect the most valiant warriors willing to fight to the death, to join his personal army against the battle which he was forewarned of by Erda, when the evil dwarf Alberich, opposes him.

I thought that dying of old age, was dying like a cow, and the only honorable death was in battle.
