Well it depends... We are here today taught by the experience of our grandparents that idolizing a man can cause the world to enter a war! If someone would appear now and try to turn people against each other, neighbor on neighbor, brother on brother it would cause an instant response from UN or NATO, as it had happened here when NATO bombed Serbia (that decision is doubtful, but it had happened and that's a fact)...

But if there wasn't the WWII and this would be the first time for a menace as Hitler to appear, my opinion is that people wouldn't act any different, we aren't that much smarter than our ancestors we just have their experience to learn from...

Thanks for that grandad...

You only have to look to see what is happening today, all of the scapegoating and violence, to see that we haven't really changed.
Germany has the toughest anti fascist laws anywhere, so Hitler wouldn't get away with targetting Germany today. Plus its economy is strong so the people there don't have so much of a reason to be dissatisfied with their lives.
But what about events in Yugoslavia or Rwanda over the last 15 years? Blaming another group for your problems, economic or otherwise; then eliminating them still happens today. We're not immune from propaganda or prejudice, or stupidity or inhumanity.

Fascism is an emotional response to stress, it happens at the individual level. Its when it appeals politically and on a national level that we're all in the cakky stuff.
There are 5 steps to fascism;
1 - Obey orders.
2 - Divide the community into 'us' and 'them'.
3 - Give the order 'Do them harm'.
4 - See who disobeys, and label them 'Sympathisers with them'.
5 - Eliminate 'them'.

There is no end to the witchunt. As one group is eliminated, another takes their place. Plus all of their friends and associates. Then anyone that resembles them, or speaks out.
Fascists are unable to tolerate any differences or dissent. They call this 'unity' and 'strength' but it is no more and no less the behaviour of the screwed up kid in the playground who picks on anyone different.
Fascism appeals to people who need a big strong leader to come along and tell them what to do, and make all their problems go away. It appeals to people who imagine they'll be in the ruling group at the top of the pecking order. And it mostly appeals to people who like the feeling of security they get from belonging to the popular, strong group.

Well, Hitler came to power cause Germany was in shambles after WWI and the people liked him cause he made Germany powerful again. If you are asking if a person like Hitler came to power would he be popular then just look around at all the nations that are in poverty, they are rip for the picking for a bigot to take command of. All they have to do is play the right political cards. Iran's Pres is kinda like him. He preaches hate and so do the terrorists. I think that the war on terro is WWIII.

he's not around and he still has a fair amount.
Hitler was good at using people's own beliefs to his own ends. Maybe he wouldn't attack the Jews, (in some parts he still might), remember he did go after homosexuals. Hitler today would probably play that one up much more -- get himself on "God's side" and use the ensuing support to get in power...
You see where this is going.
Everyone's human. We often let our prejudices get away with us. Look up the meaning of "Demagogue."
Hitler wasn't the first or last.

Yes because the people in the world are more lost than ever, and as evil as Hitler was he had great intelligence, which is hard to find these days, and much of the world is snowed by propaganda and brainwashing by less intelligent people and sources. So sadly, yes I believe he would have as many or MORE followers. Communication has gotten much more advanced.

These political types are pretty much cut from the same cloth IMO. If Hitler was around today, he wouldn't be having mass rallys or goosestepping around, he'd be wearing a suit and talking about 'consensus'.

awesome question, great one to make you think. to be honest, i've seen some pretty gross prejudice so i bet he would have some followers, but i hope that we have learned from what he did and wouldn't be SO many fools to willingly walk his path...but at the same point, with as much genocide as we are hearing in more remote countries.....somolia, african nations, the work of sadaam hussein's 2 sons, in some ways i wonder if hitler IS around today in spirit at least, and maybe not german but some other nationality....thought provoking!

Well I doubt he had a lot of followers, probably a lot of people that were afraid of being kneecapped by the gestapo. He wouldn't though I don't think, Germany is far more democratically minded and far right madmen aren't exactly raging in most democratically advanced European nations. Of course they still exist, and they have their followers but I don't think its even concievable in modern day Germany.

He was able to give people what they wanted, he also used the Jews as a stepping stone..

As much as I hate the guy, he was able to bring the country back to its feet, and raise up to becoming a major world power... If he only let his hatred go, imagine what good he could of done for the world.

He had the ability to be great person, but blew it ... on his hatred for the Jews.
