studies in the 50's and 60's actitually benefitted our country's young.
The 'new education' (whole language instead of phonics, self esteem instead of accomplishment, as well as many other things) has been a terrible thing, disasterous, even!
The United States regularly finishes well down the list when compared toward other industrialized nations.
It was not always so!
I understand that new information (scientific discovery, technological advances) need to be incorporated in the material, but there is little reason for the American school system to have fallen so far, so fast!

I propose a Progress-at-Your-Own-Rate plan.
This system has ALWAYS brought about better, brighter students!
We do not need to teach self esteem, because the sense of accomplishment that comes from a job well done will build it. It is SELF esteem, you cannot get it from outside!
I support a voucher only school system!
Make schools compete and advance for our kids sake!
NO MORE DUMBING DOWN!

Are you REALLY so silly that you would chuck a GREAT idea because it has a politicaly tag at the end?
The political tag is for the one who came up with the idea that you just said you liked!
It is from the guy that really wants to make government accountable to YOU the American People!

It was MY idea!

I want to bring the shine and glory back to the RED, WHITE and BLUE!

So for that reason, I put the question out there for you.

If you like the idea, why NOT vote for me?

Or better put, why vote for the guy who will never even attempt to do it?

You had me until you inserted the political endorsement.
Later: Okay, I've had some time to reconsider. You obviously care deeply about educational issues and we need more people like you to address some of these areas. You were probably suggesting a political candidate who cares about these issues as much as you do. It just threw me for a loop when I saw it. You express yourself very well and made many valid points..so I am able to get past it. Thank you for caring.

In the 50's and 60's, children who were unable to learn effectively "the old way," as you put it, were shut out from any opportunity to learn.

Many children were excluded and did not attend. "The old way" only worked for "average" and compliant-smart students.

Modern Special Education IS progress-at-your-own-rate planning, and with good teachers, IS HIGHLY EFFECTIVE. I have students who, when developmentally ready, make 2-year gains in academics. "Average" kids doing that are considered "smart." When my students do it, "oh, they're just catching up." Sigh.

It is all a matter of perceptions.

Our CULTURE is very "Me - oriented." Parents are failing to convey work ethics and a sense of value for education to their children, like they did 50 years ago.

Watch TV portrayals of teachers, school, and expected student attitude and behavior. Kids are watching that stuff and learning ....
