Ok here goes: #1 was attributed to Abraham Lincoln in a speech by Jon Lewis entitled "Lincoln the Free Thinker" #2 James Madison in a letter to William Bradford. #3 John Adams, #4 Thomas Jefferson and #5 I think is also a quote by Thomas Jefferson but I'm not sure. These quotes are taken out of context. Remember, these men stood for separation of church and state. They stood for freedom of religion and were very rebellious with their stands. I'm not quite sure if they were true atheists vs staunch politicians. Have a great day. I have a feeling you already knew the answers lol. Thank you for posting your question.

Well I see the question has been answered. I was really surprised when I learned that this nation was not built on Christian views. I do however believe it was build on deist views.
Thomas Jefferson as you quoted above must also be remembered for other quotes which in effect do not make him an atheist. I believe he just had a problem with Christianity, but he was still a deist.

We see, too, evident proofs of the necessity of a superintending power, to maintain the universe in its course and order."

I found this quote from Benjamin Franklin...interesting

“Religion I found to be without any tendency to inspire, promote, or confirm morality, serves principally to divide us and make us unfriendly to one another.” – Benjamin Franklin (1706 – 1790).

I am surprised and yet I guess I shouldn't be, but I was never aware of any of this being taught in school.

Nope, but the idea of Atheism doesn't make sense...In order to be an Atheist you have to first acknowledge that there is a God not to believe in....
