the benifits of marriage for gays can all be summed up, such as having some1 put on your insurance, etc in civil union. what is wrong with this idea verses gay marriage? marriage is obviously between a man and a woman, why should we change the constitution when there is a clear answer now?

I agree. There's no reason to ammend the constitution. I'm a homo, and I don't want to get married. Leave that to the straights.

If there was an option for Civil Unions that were recognised universally across the country, I doubt there would be hardly ANY gay people who cared about Gay Marriage.

So get us a legal way to unify and get the benefits of straight people with insurance and such, and I guarantee you'll see the gay side of the "Gay Marriage" issue start to subside pretty quickly.

Just a little clarification.

The constitution does not require changing to include gay people in marriage. Gay people are getting married all across the land in EVERY state in the union.

The change in the constitution is being attempted to PREVENT gay marriage from being EQUAL to straight marriage.

Nobody can stop the gay marriages from happening. They have been going on for most of my life time.

That is the most FAKE part of this entire controversy. People actually believe they are voting to BAN gay marriage. You aren't. No state has yet put anything on the ballot to BAN gay marriage. You can't. Not in this country. Every state that has passed legislation and/or made constitutional amendments regarding gay marriage has only stated that they WILL NOT TREAT IT AS EQUAL under the law.

What is wrong with that? This is America... and the fourth amendment says we don't do that here. But then, I guess what is the constitution good for anymore... The Bush administration has pretty much flushed the entire thing down the toilet, so I guess none of it matters anymore.

If you really want the fair and AMERICAN way to fix this controversy, you don't let the government recognize ANY marriages... period. Only civil unions. Let the churches work out marriages on their own terms.

Just my two points worth.

We should not change the constitution. What that does is create government sanctioned discrimination. There is a difference between marriage and civil unions. It has more to do with financial consequences when one partner dies. In a marriage with joint survivor rights, the surviving spouse inherits all the assets on a stepped up basis with no tax liability. In a civil union those assets are reassesed and retaxed at a higher rate. There are visitation issues and issues with insurance and health benefits. Look, I do not advocate gay marriage, even as a gay man. I don't care what those fanatics think about my lifestyle, but I will not go to my grave knowing that government is poised to take all my assests and tax the living hell out them before my partner inherits what we worked so hard to acheive. If people want to be bigots like those that say we don't deserve anything, let them be bigots. I didn't choose to be hated by the religious right, they chose to hate me regardless what they say about hating the sin and not the sinner. Hate is hate no matter how you spew it out. I deserve to be treated like any other citizen in this country. I work, I pay my taxes, more so than the many who pay nothing at all living off the taxpayers. Why should my assets be seized just because of those who feel their marriage is so rocky it could not possibly survive me being married.

The benefits (and downsides) of a committed relationship are the same whether you are gay or straight, remember gays often have kids too, their own or ones they care for or adopt. We all pay the same taxes and we should all receive equal treatment from the state that we equally fund without discrimination.

Civil marriage has nothing to do with religion and religious laws.

It's easier to have one system called marriage for all otherwise you need a whole parallel set of legislation for what is in effect the same thing but just more bookwork to pander to prejudice, in UK we have civil partnerships and these are the legal equivalent in almost every way to a marriage but they are not consecrated in a church...some will have a blessing in a gay friendly church after the civil ceremony if it is important to them, say if they are Christians.

I'd leave it up to individual churches entirely to decide how they want to proceed on gay marriage and conducting them in church as regular wedding are persently... I personally don't care if they do or do not.

Religion & God need have nothing to do with a civil marriage however... whether it is between a man & woman or between two people of the same sex ... it's important to make this clear.

If marriage is a religiously sacred act, ordained by God, than why do gays want it. Since they are gay, they are clearly living lives in opposition to God, which if they consider it a sin and try to repent would be okay but they don't. A gay union or marriage is basically a way of confessing that these people do not seek repentance of such and are therefore condemned. This profanes "marriage".

If gays are immoral anyways why would they want to be married, they might as well live in sin. There are basically two reasons to get married,

1-you love someone and wish to express this love physically so you get married to perform this morally according to God to come together as one flesh (Most people do not marry for this reason)

2-having done the act mentioned in 1, you now intend to do so to have children and be parents (many people do not see this as a reason for marriage)

Reasons 1 and 2 are only truly capable when the two people getting married are of opposite gender. The third reason is why people get married today. This is not a reason for marriage according to God.

3-marriage is just the next step in a long term relationship. God, sex, kids, submittance, vows are of no importance, marriage is just a way of saying I love you. (This is the reason divorce rates are so high, and is the supporting argument for gay marriage)

Well look at the two face attitude that the united states was based on..

We came here for freedom of religion, but the first thing we did is take away the native american's religion language and land.

ALL religion should be outlawed and maybe that will keep people from killing each other in the name of God.

The only reason that Bush is making a big deal about this subject is to keep all his idiotic supporters busy why he and his buddies try to rape Iraq.

I have lots of Gay friends and they DESERVE the same rights as anybody else. what folks do in the privacy of thier life is thier buisness, between them and any higher power.

Ok. But that sounds like separate but equal. It didn't work for the blacks. Because separate is always less. I favor full equality. Let the straights have civil union, too then marriage can be a religious thing ruled over by churches (there are gay churches, too) and everyone is equal again.

Marriage should NOT be strictly between a male and a female. I agree with TXChristDem. And gay marriage IS legal already in some areas, so some people CAN see fairness! Gay couples in love should have every right to marry like any other couple. There's lots of heterosexuals who RUIN what marriage is all about with marriages of convenience, cheating, divorce, bastard children, abuse, coveting, threesomes... There is NO WAY that gay marriage will disgrace marriage. It looks like plenty of heterosexuals have disgraced it themselves and they feel threatened that gay people will make better couples! By the way - stop basing all of your ideas on the bible, bible, BIBLE. Not everyone is a christian, so YOU are WRONG by FORCING your religious beliefs and YOUR puritanical codes on everyone else. Clam up already! It is not up to these religious NUTS to tell everyone how to live. Judge NOT, you morons!

Maybe they don't want to be married just to be legal but to show their love and commitment for one another! Who are you to say marriage is between a man and a woman?? Marriage is supposed to be about love NOT discrimination! The constitution says "all men are created equal" it does not say except gays! They aren't hurting anyone so leave them alone!!

Marriage implies sanction by religion (God if there is one) and to many "true believers" it's a Sin for intragender realtions to occur. It's semantics...Civil unions confer the same rights and that's why there's a big arguement over this. The religious and secular are in conflict and it looks like the religious are going into the bedroom and winning one for God. FYI I favor true freedom including the choice of mate regardless of weather your choosen one is of the same gender or not. PEACE and no I am not Gay...I'm just sick of the stupid arguing and bickering about peoples preferences in the sack.
