A true gentleman would point out that it's not polite to disrespect his family, but some 'gentlemen' would challenge another to a duel, for honour. (that might only have happened in the olden days though).

It would depend on what form the disrespect took, I think. If someone said rude things about them in front of me, I would make it clear that I objected by saying something like 'Hey, that's my family you're talking about - do you mind?' If rude comments were called out or rude gestures made towards the ladies, I would ignore them. Only in the case of physical attacks or touching would I think a physical response was called for. After all, only crazy people would insult your sister or mother in front of you, and crazy people are likely to be violent. Your mother and sister would prefer you to remain unharmed if possible, I am sure!

Harsh words should be exchanged definitely. And depending on what was said some blows as well. If it was a minor infraction them letting the other person know not to speak to their mother or sister in that manner is enough.

Good question, and as a southern gentleman, I am hard pressed to give you an answer. I suppose I would have to ask them the reason for their comment and their source of information, all of the questions I would ask while visiting this person in the hospital.

Pistols at 10 paces was the norm at one point.

If we are talking that soccer game, the best response would have been to keep your head and score the winning goal, then wiggle your butt at the guy.

Remember, it was overtime in the world cup championship with the score tied. That insult was intended to do exactly what it did, infuriate the guy.

In American professional sports, that is real low on the insult meter.
