I think it's a combination of many things. In todays "hurried up" lifestyle, people don't allow enough time to get from point A to point B. So now they're driving too fast, following too closely and just looking for a way to pass the vehicle in front of them, instead of being aware of their surroundings. Then you add in drinking a cup of coffee, talking on a cell phone, or just not paying attention, and it's a recipe for disaster. I live about 3 hours north of Massachusetts's infamous Route 128, and the few times I've driven on it, it's "go with the flow" or get run over! Bumper to bumper @ 90-100 MPH! One little distraction by one driver and you have a major pile-up! It's crazy! Glad I live in "the sticks" where it's not too bad yet!

Because of the higher speeds, people don't pay close enough attention to what is going on and they travel too close to the car in front of them.... so by the time they react to a problem, it is too late.
But actually the freeway has fewer accidents statistically compared to intersections in busy urban areas.
