I love my mother but she's really overweight. It makes her depressed all the time. I want her to feel good about herself and be healthy, but she never makes an effort to lose weight and she eats constantly. I'm only 15 so how do I go about telling her what I think and motivating her to lose weight?

You can't make your mom loose weight, she has to want to do that. The weight may not be ther reason for the depression. Food can be a safety net. Or, it may be something that she can control. She may have some other issues. You can share your concerns with your mom in a loving way by telling her you are worried that the extra pounds are making her unhappy and you are worried about her health.
Make sure you eat healthy and limit your quantites. You can ask your mom take take walks with you in the evening or morning. Tell her you want quiet time with her alone. The two of you can do more bonding and you both get good exercise. The walks can get longer as time goes by. Instead of going to see a movie as a family, ask to go to the zoo and walk around. Try to move the activity away from food and more on activity.
You could even start a hobby together like scrapbooking. If she has a craft she may be more likely to do that instead of grabbing some chips. It's worth a try. but be careful, don't let mom think you are nagging or ashamed of her, that might drive her to the food.

Don't! Start doing the grocery shopping and cooking. Cook healthy low-fat, low cal foods. Have only healthy food in the house.

At night, rather then sitting down to watch TV, suggest going for a walk. Good mother-daugther time

Keep her busy and away from food.

One day she will realize that she lost 5 pounds, say keep it up, tell her she looks good. Encourage her and keep cooking and buying only healthy foods.

You can even find a school or something that has healthy cooking classes, Gee Mom, you lost 5 pounds that is great. You are on a roll, I found these cooking classes that I thought would be fun for us to take together. Maybe they can help you lose more. I love you so much, I want you to live healthy and happy for a long time and this is such a great start.

Get the picture?

YOU can't make your mother lose weight. Unfortunately, an eating disorder (and that's what obesity is a result of) is an emotional disorder. The best thing to do is to encourage your mother to buy healthy snacks and get rid of the unhealthy ones. Talk to her as calmly and lovingly as you can and tell her your concerns and let her know you are willing to do whatever you can to help and support her. She probably needs some counseling but that is something she has to decide to do on her own. Ask her to go for a short walk with you or anything that will get her moving. It is a very very difficult thing to handle. Believe me, I have suffered from obesity for many years and I can tell you that it is a very lonely and painful disease. Remember, it might be easy for people to say, "just quit eating" or "get up and move" but it isn't easy. It's the hardest thing one has to do at times. Good luck to you and your mother. I will pray that you and she will be able to work together in making her life a more rewarding and more healthy one. By the way, I admire you very much for your concern about your mother.

The first thing to do is not nag her.
The second thing is to be a good example for her. Eat well yourself, and invite her for a walk or bike ride.
Try to go a month eating 0 sugar and see how well you do. It might help you understand what she is up against.
Give her a day at the spa for a present.
Tell her you love her, and want her to be around to play with her grandkids.
Encourage her, and don't be her diet police. She will not lose weight until she wants to, and won't keep it off until she makes up her own mind.
She may be depressed. Try to get her to talk about it, without judging her.
Encourage her to go to a doctor, who may tell her to lose weight.
Love her, fat or thin, and be proud of who she is.

tell your mother exactly how you feel. that you are concerned about her life and her health. it is hard to change a person's lifestyle. offer to change together. visit a nutritionist, and prepare healthy meals for everyone to eat, not only your mom. and plan to walk at least 30 minutes a day, most days of the week. remember it is a long road to weight loss, showing your concern and changing your lifestyles together will motivate her. also give words of encouragement that she is doing a good job

I know seeing your mother over weight worries you. but she is an adult. She may be depressed and that can cause over weight...but the problem is getting her to understand that she has a problem. I would say talk to her...most children and teens do not understand their parents are human also...I mean just talk to em..don't go to her with any attitude, but approach her like you did here...Tell her you want to sit down and talk to her..tell her u love her and you are only worried about her and her health...sometimes adults find it hard to listen about their problems from their children or teens.. or if you still feel u can't talk to her, maybe u could talk to your father..or maybe your mother has a sister or brother or close friend of hers you could talk to and ask for advice on helping you reach out to your mom...

First of all I'd like to thank you for writing a coherent, precise question. That is very rare on this site. And about your mother, I would not suggest telling her she's fat or anything, it will just make her feel worse.. Try to do some healthy cooking for her. And compliment her.

Ask her if she'll go on walks with you... maybe encourage her to see a counselor since it sounds like she's got an emotional eating problem. Either way, no one can be forced to lose weight. They have to want it and work for it themselves.
