When in an actual fire fight, a soldier DOES NOT GIVE A ****! About his country, apple pie, baseball, politics. He has one or two things on his mind, kill the other guy and leave no brother behind. I describe it as at any time YOUR so called country will place you in a position to voluntarily commit suicide or kill the other guy who knows about as much as you do for being put into that situation. Body count has replaced gaining ownership of new territory, gaining oil and mineral reserves........ to determine if the U S of A is winning the war. Being a grunt no matter which side he is on is still a grunt. More have committed suicide than what is inscribed KIA's on the wall and 60 % of the homeless are estimated to be Viet Nam era vets. How many flag wavers reach out to these grunts. Could you imagine how our soldiers would fight if our homeland was attacked. Then to die is for a cause, I live in the USofA.

Well now you serve your country; you make the other guy die for his; and if you have to die you do it for your friends. Let them say whatever they want when they're putting you in the ground, you won't be there to see it anyway.
To your point though, anyone unwilling to serve their country in the military or some othe rsignificant way as a part of the citizenship duties does start with less respect from me.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. You need to ask some Vietnam Vets about that & see how patriotic they seem now. Ask them how the U.S. has taken care of them after they risked they're lives. Do you even understand why we get into these wars? The U.S. is the best place in the world to live, but the gov't isn't trustworthy.

Soldiers are not sacrificing their lives for what they are lead to believe. While the people who send our young men and women off to war are sucking the cocks of business and corporations while getting rich as "Consultants" we are slowly losing our liberties and being treated like we live in a dictatorship in every way imaginable. So my answer is NO I would not die for my country, but I would die fighting to reclaim America for the people, should it hit the fan.

The only way I would put myself into that position would be if the politicians (or their children) that made the decision to put me there, were either in front of me or beside me.
Btw, I'm ex-military but I'll never do that again after watching this tyrant ruin my country for personal gains.

It depends on the reason/s.
Take for example, if i notice someone has something bad that would effect my country ( terriors) and i have the means to stop that person if it was too too late to report the incident, i would rather save thousands. I really think we should all be saying yes to this question.

I've been shot twice in combat and stabbed once. Still have 37 shotgun pellets in my arms and chest that weren't taken out becuase the VA is pretty cheap.
Would I do it again? absolutely!
Why? "There is no greater purpose in life than to live a life for the purpose greater than yourself"

I'd prefer, in the words of General Patton, who understood a good deal about the nature of war, to make the "other poor, dumb bastard die for HIS country."

Are you talking about America the way it is right now? No; civil liberties are erroded, and freedom has marched right out of Dodge.
Would I die for a cause I truely believed rightous, if I had to.
Would I fight for a cause I truely believed was rightous, absolutely.
"The point of war is not to die for your country. The point of war is to make your enemy die for his" - I forget who said this.

pppl are pretty selfish arent they? i would give my life for my country, but not purposly die for it. id probably be more likely to be one of the guys who spends his life discovering how to make the bomb than be the guy who does a five minute bombing to end a war (which i deeply honor and have nothing against) and then barely makes it home alive or doesnt. but given the choice, i would give my life up for my country, the US of A, which should be proud to be led by a great man like george w bush
