By the way--I don't mean "Christ"---it IS typed correctly. :-)

My mother mentioned that we have the surname Crist in our geneology and I was just wondering the origins. :-)

Crist

English: from Old English Crist, probably applied as a nickname for someone who played the part of Christ in a pageant.

North German: from a short form of the personal name Kristen or one of its variants (see Christian*).

Americanized spelling of North German Krist*.

The names with "*" above are links for further study.

If you mis-typed and meant "Christ", I'm wrong.

Well, in Western Europe "Crist" is no common surname.

I'd expect it to be a variation the surname "Christ" that's originated in the German-speaking countries and that's pronounced 99% the same as "Crist" in English.

For example, there are a few hundred "Christ" living in the Northwest of Switzerland - but to get further you'd have to have more information. Perhaps you can contact a Mr Christ in Switzerland who is busy finding out more...

Well, i assume you are referring "Crist" to Jesus Christ? The name Christ was not given to him until the end of his life. For most of his living being he was called by his parent given name Jesus of Nazareth. People started believing that he was he was the "christ"- which stems from the Greek word "christos", which is actually a interpretation of the Hebrew word "masia" - the chosen one. That is when they decided to branch out into another Jewish sect with these teachings.
