three guys went out to eat and the bill was $30 so they each payed $10. the waiter later realized that he had overcharged them $5 so he decided to keep $2 and gave $1 back to each guy. so when you add the $9 dollars each guy payed and the $2 the waiter kept the total is $29. where is the other dollar
no it wasn't tax or tip or anything like that.

it is the old adage of adding before multiplying. A great riddle that baffles even math profs. Place the brackets in the right place, do the math correctly and you get the right answer
10 * 3 - 3 - 2 = 25 (when following the rules)
9 * 3 - 2 = 25 (when following the rules)
the way the ridle is posed, the $2 the waiter kept is added to the total ($27) resuting is $29 instead of being subtracted from it and giving the correct result of $25

it's a play with words

each man paid $10.00 for the dinner, to divide the cost evenly at $30 dollars.

When the waiter realized the cost was $25, this would mean that to divide the dinner cost evenly, each man would pay $8.33

$8.33 X 3 = 24.99 (the cost of the dinner)

People assume that because each man gets a dollar back that the dinner cost them $9.00.

$9 x 3 = $27 + $2 to the waiter = $ 29 (Missing a dollar)

If you take the $24.99 that the dinner cost, plus the $5.00 that the waiter overcharged it equals $29.99. which means only a penny is missing due to rounding off.

It's not an accurate statement of the money, that's the issue. They didn't each pay $9, they actually paid $9.3333333. They were only out of pocket $9.
