Stay with the 4.6 engine they have a lot more power than the 302. The plastic intake did have problems and Ford redesigned the intake with metal for the coolent passeges, Get the updated one at the dealer. Changing the engines would be alot of time and $, the transmission thats in it will only bolt up to the 4.6 motor. Any Towncar, crown vics, that have a 4.6 from 94 to 99 will work, I dont recommend using one from 94 and back though.

If you put in something other than the original engine be prepared to buy more than just the engine. All the engine computers, transmission, cooling system, etc.
I would check with some of the aftermarket companies like Edelbrock for a manifold that is metal and maybe will give you a little more power.
If you have to put in a different engine, find a wrecked car that has what you want so you can get all the parts and see how they connect.

yes! The Lincoln Mark VIII is built on the same platform, and architecture as your Thunderbird. The Mark VIII is loaded with a 32V 4.6L V8 that, when used in the Mach 1 Mustangs and Mercury Marauders pumped out 300+ hp! It's not exactly the same engine in the Mach and Marauder, but VERY close. The main difference is that the Intech V8 used in the Mark VIII works with the independent rear suspension found on Thunderbirds and Cougars. My friend has a Mark VIII with the 32V and it gets down on it. I had a Cougar with the same engine you have now, and his Mark VIII smoked me!

96 didn't come with a 302. The 4.6 is a great block that is still used in cars and trucks today. Take the car to a good mechanic.

sure you are able to. What we do is pass each and every of the factors from the previous engine (manifold, sensors, etc) directly to the recent engine. robotically its a similar component. yet why are you changing the engine in spite of the indisputable fact that?

If you change the engine, you have to change the transmission, bracket, motor mounts, computer, wire harness, etc.
