It's such a funny name for a little insect with pincers on its bum.

Old English éarwicga - just ear + wiggle. Nothing to do with wings or wigs, but a wiggly thing (insect) that can go in your ear. The dictionary is your friend.

I think it's because they like to settle down in a fleshy crevice unnoticed... and between the ear and skull is the only one. Horrible but true... hence ear wig. Check behind your ears folks!

I don't know if this is true but I heard that they would find their way into wigs(usually judges wigs) and crawl into their ears when they donned the wig. That is where, apparently, they were first discovered and named. I don't know how much truth, if any , there is in that though.

I was told it had something to do with the shape of the wings. Although I have not seen it myself, I was told that they resemble the ear. The word is supposed to be a corruption of Ear-Wing.

i dont know but i relly hate them,seriously they scare the crap out of me.its cos when i was younger my cousin said that when ur asleep they crawl in ur ear and eat ur brain.so it mite come from that.i dont speak to my cousin anymore.

they get that name because they may crawl into your ear if you fall asleep outside in some places.
