Unicef is always good. But I think the best thing - to echo sentiments aleady expressed - is to donate to small, on the ground charities in Sri Lanka. That way, you are sure that the money will go towards making a real difference as opposed to paying some expats fat cat salary. Ask your guests to buy excersise books or text books and donate them to a local school.Or put the money towards paying one years school fees for a child in Sri Lanka - the possibilities are endless!
Great Idea! Have a lovely wedding! (I'll make a small donation to my charity of choice in your honour! )

If you are getting married in Sri Lanka why not donating money to the needy of that country, apart from that helping to feed the third world is always a very worthwhile cause. Why don't you get each guest to adopt a child from the poorer countries, you pay so much annually and the child writes to you.

You should pick causes that have special meaning to the 2 of you. If you have a family member who has dealt with cancer, maybe the American Cancer Society, or if you're more enviromentally friendly, maybe Greenpeace, just to think of a couple. For example, if I were doing this, I would probably choose the Autism Society of America, since I have a son with autism. BTW, I think what you're doing is great, more couples should do this! Congrats on your upcoming wedding!

You could always word the request:
"In lieu of gifts, the couple requests donations be made to any of the following charitable organizations . . . "
Also, you can visit http://www.charities.org/ for more information on charities such as:
March of Dimes
Make-A-Wish Foundation of America
NAACP Legal Defense Fund
National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund
Reading is Fundamental
Ronald McDonald House
Good luck!

What about donating the money to cancer research, or to the baby unit at your local hospital, or to the elderly. There are loads of worthwhile causes around, just pick one that most support and give everybody the opportunity to pick their own.
Why not hold a fund raising event?

I have an excellent answer for you, but it's more than you bargained for. You see, you are asking the wrong question. Unless it's a shower or a small child's birthday party, one never indicates that gifts are expected. So what you really meant to ask was "How can we maneuver those guests who are inclined to give gifts to ask us what sort of gift we would prefer?"
The solution lies in exerting old fashioned control over your guest list, inviting each guest by name -- yes even boyfriends and small children -- and then following these invitations with confirmatory phone calls. This call not only allows you to clarify who is and who is not welcome, but gives your guests a golden opportunity to ask what sort of gift you'd like.

Just ask each individual or couple to pick his/her own charity and make a donation in your name.
