This question could apply to Jewish people, too.

actually Jews constantly read Psalms whether during prayer and especially during times of trouble.

its a custom among Jews to read a set of Psalms that correspond to the persons name on the anniversary of his death.

the connection with saying Psalms with suffering is well documented in Jewish history.

Actually, it could apply to me, too... surprise surprise...though I am neither Christian nor Jewish... Because I love the Psalms. Also the Proverbs.

But, Ecclesiastes 3 is my favorite passage in the entire Bible... (the one that starts off, "To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven...")

All of the above make me feel better when I'm down.

The book of Job is very helpful to anyone who is suffering. It shows that suffering can be a test of one's faith, moreso than punishment for something he or she has done wrong and that SUFFERING DOES NOT COME FROM GOD. It reminds the Christian that even before Christ was crucified, someone who was a righteous man held fast to his faith during tremendous personal suffering and grief and he was restored because of it. As in Job's declaration: "I know that my redeemer liveth and that He shall stand, at the latter day upon the earth. And though after my skin, worms destroy this body, yet, in my flesh shall I see God." That is my favorite verse for suffering.

I try to read 5 Psalms every day. When I am hurt, sick, mad, sad, sorry, lonely, happy, or afraid, I can always find what I need.

No. I turn to Jeremiah 17:7-8. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; Who can know it?"

It makes me feel warm all over.
