A run would be more demanding at the time you are running. More stress and pressure on the muscles from the "jarring". Both would be equally good for you....one just taking maybe a little longer than the other. People all the time say "I can't run but I can walk". Running also puts that instant stress on the heart and lungs, so be sure you can handle it. I do 4 a day!! Love it!!

The 3 mile run, definitely burns more calories. Though, if you are just starting an exercise program, you should start out walking and then gradually add running by alternating 2 - 4 minutes walking/running.

Is this one of those trick questions, like if you dropped a pound of bricks and a pound of feathers from the same height at the same time, which would hit the ground first?
They are both three miles. Running is more invigorating than walking, but walking might burn more fat calories than running would (it's aerobic, not anaerobic like running).

walking burns more calories per hour, but running gets your heart rate up better.
Maybe run for 1.5 miles and brisky walk the 1.5 miles left. That way you get the best of both worlds!

Walk one block and see how you feel. Then turn around and run back to the start. You will know the answer that applies to you. Also worth noting, if you do the same test tomorrow you will find it easier than today.

You don't actually start burning off calories until you have raised your blood pressure for twenty minutes and jogging is very hard on your knees. A fast paced walk will last longer and is easier on your body.
