To keep this simple just head over to thesamba.com and you'll find out everything you want having to do with air-cooled vw's. You'll be albe to find a nice car on there with out to much trouble, my 65 came from there for $3000: http://s51.photobucket.com/albums/f386/patrickm2213/Bug%2065/
Also local clubs and car shows are a good place to find them to, which is where my next project came from, 71 bus kombi for $1500:

Forget the above post, head over there and read about them from people who actucal know these cars. Anyways good luck, there's tons of great cars out there in your price range, just pick the one you like.

For $3,000 or $4,000 you should be able to find a reasonably clean, good running bug from the 60s.

I'd look for RUST--these cars have no frames, so if the floorpans or other structures are rusted, you are SCREWED, in a major way.

Also the engines are only good for tops 60,000 miles. So find one with a recent engine rebuild.

My favorite old VWs are 60's models that have had later (newer) engines installed from the 70s. This way you get more power and an alternator instead of a silly generator and 6 volt battery.

If you prefer a totally stock VW bug, go for 1967 and newer.

Also, don't plan on very good steering or brakes.

eBay is not a good site for that. You should find one locally and see it first. I would go to www.craigslist.org and check there. Also yahoo Auto should have listings too. But check first one.
