Unless you live under a rock you already know the answer to this question, but anyway:
It is symbolic of the commitment/promise of marriage to be carried out at a later date.
Plus, if a man spends a ton of money on it, it kinda guarantees the woman will go through with it just to keep the ring (*grins*).
You sure ask a lot of questions...lol

It is suppose to be a way of saying that you love the girl and that you have realized that you want to be only with her. And that you have made up your mind that you want to only be with her and you want her to be only with you. That you and her will now become ONE PERSON. So if you are thinking about giving someone an engagement ring make sure that you understand what that means. Alot of poor guys do it because they have someone that is ready to wear the ring and be engaged, just be sure that when you give someone a ring that you and SHE understand what it really means. I mean I know women, girls that just wanted the ring and what follows just because that is what everyone tells them they are suppose to do being a female. So you two need to sit down and really talk and make sure that yall know what yall are doing. I think that people don't think about what being engaged and married really means that means that you accept that person just the way they are, not that well if I can get her or him to change they will be just what I am looking for is why marriages don't last. Because if you can't deal with the fact that she spends too much money (example) then I can promise you she will not change and neither will you. Just think about what you are commiting to before doing it this is not something that you rush into. Because it is suppose to last forever. That is why the vows say until death do you part. Good luck!

Now it's a symbol of promise and eternity.
Back in the day men gave women rings so that if they ever died she could sell it to help her and her children survive after his loss (before there was life insurance)

It symbolizes commitment to one person. The ring finger was thought to symbolize love because the vein in it runs directly to the heart.

It is a symbol of your intention and promise to get married. It's kind of odd that only women wear them though, isn't it?
