Retired racing greyhounds do well in small spaces. Contrary to popular belief they need very little excersise - they are sprinters. They have short bursts of energy and then sleep. Because of this they earned the nickname "the 45mph couch potato". Overall they can sleep from 18-20 hours per day. They do enjoy running but don't need to do it daily (really they can't do it everyday). Two short leash walks per day can provide them all the excersise they need, plus several other trips outside for potty breaks. It sounds like you are looking for an accessory, like a lamp. Most dogs now live 12 years or longer. You are choosing a living, breathing, feeling animal to share your life with. You need to think about your lifestyle, your activity level, the amount of time you have to give to your dog. Most dog behavior problems come from the owner not taking the time needed to properly care of the dog. There are many books and websites that can help you through the process. Once you decide what type of dog you want, you can start looking. Shelters are a good place to start but not the only place. Take your time and you will increase your chances of a good match.

I can tell you what not to get, a Jack Russel, they bark alot, which can cause problems in townhouses, I would know.
But you should get a dog from a shelter, they do need good homes, and I got both of my dogs from a shelter.

Listen to sawadi ka, first off. Then, if your set on getting a dog still, Listen to Lauren. Figure out basic breed types that generally match your lifesyle. Go to the shelter for a rescue, but go armed with what type of animal you need as well. Otherwise you may end up taking home a puppy that grows too big or you end up being allergic to or whatever.

I think you should try shelters first.

There you should be able to find dogs of different sizes that should be able to fit your townhouse well.

In addition, you will be helping a dog that may not have another chance of survival.

Below are links to dog breed selectors. You answer some questions about your lifestyle, what size dog you want, and if you want it to shed and it tells you what breed of dog will do the best with you. Try them all because they may give slightly different breeds and ask slightly different questions.

It's not gonna go to heaven when it dies! GET OVER IT PEOPLE! just don't get a cat, cuz then i'll leave you an even longer Answer.
