I know on US Airways you can purchase an upgrade to first class. But on United, is it possible to do the same or can you use mileage points to do so? if so, what's the cost or mileage points?

Yes, you can upgrade using purchased upgrade coupons, complimentary domestic or international upgrade coupons, paying the fare difference (expensive) or using miles.

The key to upgrades is your fare category. Usually an S or T fare basis can't be upgraded.

If you want to use mileage you cannot do that at the airport....only other way is to pay first class fare...you cannot combine points and fares.
