Try Fetzer Merlot or Cabernet. It's a good red and only runs about $10-12. Best around for that amount.

If you can spen about $20, then try Clois du Bois or anything from Sterling. Excellent wines!

Jack London is great for about $25 or you can go up to $40 for Stag's Leap, which is awesome.

Have fun!

Look for Ca' de Solo "Big House Red" or Toasted Head Meritage (has a fire-breathing bear on the label). The former can be found at Beverages & More; the latter I get at Cost Plus World Market.

To be more general, Chile puts out some distinctive and highly affordable reds, though only Casillero del Diablo--Concha y Toro--has been consistently enjoyable.

All three wines are under $10 US. Best of all, none are too bulky for summer.

What is 'affordable' to you? $75 for a 2000 Barolo is affordable to me, you?

Ok - under $15:

Six Prong Red
Cycles Gladiator Syrah
Amberhill Cab
House Red
Pepi Sangiovese
Chiaramonte

All these are quite good for the price - especially if you decant.

$16-$35

Raymond Cabernet
Fontelloro Red Table Wine
Teusner Syrah
Maryhill Sangiovese Reserve
Goose Ridge Syrah (2002)
Shotfire Ridge Shiraz (I cant remember how much this is)

Golden Gate Cabernet-cheapest under 10 red that tastes over 10. I pay 3 bucks at Albertsons in Idaho for it. This is my favorite.
Columbia Crest makes some good reds for under 10 as well.
Rabbit Ridge is a little more but still under 10. I like their Merlot.
For under 20 some good Merlots are Rodney Strong and Clos du Bois.

Concha y Toro Cabernet / Merlot 80%-20% from Chile. Yummy. Avoid the Ripple.

Buy a bunch and figure out what you like. Typically, you have quite a few options under $5. However, if you like a good cab, then you might have to fork out a bit more for something decent. I haven't found many sub-$5 cabs out there that have made me happy.

If you want a very decent merlot, I'd reccoment Red Bicyclette.

2004 was a good year in CA. So most Reds from that year are OK. Look around, find a Merlot, Zinfindel, Cab. Sav., or whatever you like from that year. Affordable is personal...anything under $10.00/btl is not good. Stay away from Reunite
